Why is my power button broken?
I press down on my phone power button and it doesn’t turn my phone on and then when it does goes dead I cannot turn on the phone

This won't affect anything one way or another, but I'm curious to know if the fingerprint sensor is working or not since it's built into the power button.
Anyway, although there can be several reasons for the power button not to work, the most obvious and the first thing to try is to replace the button itself. It's a mechanical component so it's susceptible to wear, plus it's on the outside of the phone so it's exposed to environmental factors such as heat, cold, humidity and liquids.
Sorry to say iFixit doesn't have a guide to that repair, but there's a Spanish site called Nadie Me Llama Gallina that has just what you need.

The sensor itself is supposed to match the color of your phone, so you are expected to buy the right one, but of course the color is strictly cosmetic so any button will work. You can order them from any number of sites like Amazon, eBay and AliExpress. Double check using your model number because there could be differences between versions like the 4G vs. 5G models. Here's one for the 4G version that should work; it's just an example so do your homework.

@nenecunn this does not sound like your power button but it sounds like a power issue. First you want to check your power supply. Make sure it has the proper voltages. Check to make sure connectors are not bend etc. After that, check the charging port. Clean it of any debris etc, use a few puffs of air to clean it out. If none of this works, get a ammeter and see if your phone draws any amperage from the charger.This could be a battery issue as well as a charging port/charging board issue. This series also has issues with the flex cable from the daughter board (sub board) to the main board. You will need to check that as well. with my phone A13 when I plug in charger it shows nothing but when I pull charger out it lights up the amount of % phone is charged. before it went dead to would bring up my home screen; but now its dead. I tried to "Find my device" from my PC hoping that even though it was dead it would still ring it and thereby bring it back up. i wonder if I see if I can update a google app on my PC which is on my phone if it will activate it then. Idk just thinking around the box.
A13, 73% battery level.
The power button does nothing. It does not turn off the screen. It does not wake up the screen. The only way I can get it to wake up is to have someone call me.
