Plugging in the charger should light the charging LED. If not, you may have a bad charger. If so, you battery is dead because it didn't charge - so your computer won't turn on. -- ASSUMING it won't turn on without the charger.
If the charging LED lights, you should be able to turn it on. If so, the battery is bad or not charged. If not, you have an internal problem.

What is the full model number of the laptop as seen on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop?
Please confirm that when you say "totally dead" this means that there is no charging light shown on the laptop when the charger is connected to it?
