Silencing the Win11 upgrade message?

Block Image

I upgraded my SSD from 512GB>1TB and my machine is now pushing Win11 on me when it did not do this before. I guess the restart and subsequent hardware detection change after cloning the SSD triggered it. Nonetheless I shut it down for now and told it to shush in Windows Update but is there a way to silence the startup prompt and then I can decide when I am ready? I know we could do this with 7/8.x>10 with Never10 (and yes, I DID check if Steve Gibson did it again; nope >_<) but I see nothing with 10>11 on upgradeable computers.

@nick this "upgradeable computers." will become more and more of an issue sine thee are so many older computers out there that it will lead to many abandoned devices. I do hope somebody comes up with an excellent answer,

@oldturkey03 Mine is 11th gen so it CAN run 11, with the TPM requirement met as well. I'm not ready. I have one of the lucky few but I'm holding out until closer to 2025.

I just want to silence it for the rest of this year and 2024.

This may possibly work though written for W10. Click below:

Never 10

If that doesn't work there is always the freeware

Winaero

Type "Update" in the search box on the top left and select "Behaviour\Disable Windows Update". Check the box in front of "Disable Windows updates and notifications"

It works on my computer. Let us know how it goes for you. There other possible tweaks but they are more complicated.

Then again there is the Group Policy Editor

To disable Windows update notifications using Group Policy Editor:

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type gpedit.msc in the box and press Enter.
  3. In the Local Group Policy Editor window, use the left pane to navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Update > Manage end use experience.
  4. Double-click the Display options for update notifications policy on your right.
  5. Select the Disabled option.
  6. Click Apply followed by OK.

Hi @nick,

Which "nope" was that? Never 10 or all three?

If you are able to disable TPM in the BIOS, that should silence it. Windows 11 requires TPM to be installed per the minimum requirements. Windows 10 might still bug you to "upgrade" to a compatable computer, but there won't be a startup prompt.
