Horizontal lines over iMac 24 screen

Hi,

I got horizontal lines over the display! During the warranty period they replaced the board ( it blacked out ) and now this is happening. They refused to replace the device saying out of warranty and asked to replace it :-|. They were not even sure that changing the display will fix the issue. I am hesitant to replace the screen as I am better off to buy a new one rather keep repairing the faulty product.

Is there any way to fix it?

Tried
- Reinstall the OS
- External Display = Works fine
- Reseating those 3 cables

Lines kind of flickers, may be some lose cables?

According to Apple, it's an LCD malfunction.

So I took my iMac to a technician.

The problem, apparently, lies in a cable that also powers the LCD, which is located on one of the tops of the screen, and which, to be replaced, requires detaching the screen glass from the LCD itself, which is a very sensitive operation. So the only option is to replace the entire LCD.

This cable (of the FFC/FPC type), has to sustain a very high voltage (around 50V) to power the LCD (despite the iMac's power supply being 15.9V), and it heats up a lot!

What happens is that it starts to degrade at the connector, to the point where it lets the signals leak between the various connectors and short-circuits some of them, which ends up causing those lines.

The level of brightness makes a fundamental contribution to this problem. The higher the brightness used, the sooner the problem occurs.

At its lowest brightness, temperature at the top of the screen it's normal; when it's at its highest, you can fry an egg!

Seems the discussion in Apple site is already locked.

@yijunlin @jen79010 Hi, I request every one to post the concern on this thread in apple forum, hoping they take some action. Apple support will deny that they are not aware of issue, as no one reported. Forum does n't matter for them. Record that phone call ( it will help you claim your case in court )

STEP 1 : first make a post here :

Feedback - iMac - Apple

Step 2 : Then post your issue here and also mention if you have completed step 1

Will do, thanks for the link.

Done that. Thanks.

Done, and Done. I'm really concerned about this. Is my other iMac 24 going to be the same?

さんによる

Many. The problem is that there are not much report in Apple community. I just had reported this and trying to keep the thread at the top so it is more obvious to other people. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255...

Hello Lat V, I'm having definitely the same problem with you. As I find your post here, I wonder if it is a Quality control issue cuz I bought this iMac in August 2021.

@yijunlin Yeah Exactly!! I have the same hexagon burning like you. Thing is it will get worse, the portion will get filled up with full lines after few weeks. Apple will deny mistake from their side, it would cost you around 650USD to replace the screen. I plan to buy new one instead of repairing it, they say, they will bill be for further repairs after replacing the display unit, feels scammed. If you need my support any way to act as proof, happy to do so.

さんによる

Hey just wanted to know if there’s any update on this, I found that I have the same problem too, on a 2 year old iMac 24” M1. It keeps coming in and out, every now and then and then it seems to be fine, except for a very faint horizontal line. Did anything work for anybody in here?

さんによる

In Taiwan, several cases appeared same problem after using iMac for 2 yrs.https://youtu.be/KIuC22KkREE

さんによる

I just got exactly the same problem on my M1 IMac which I bought mid 2021 in Singapore. Maybe there are some manufacturing issues with a batch of these iMacs. Such displays should not fail within such short time.

さんによる

Looks like we all have the same issues after about 2 years of usage. I have made the purchase in Jan 2022 and now the screen is having same issue as you guys. A barely 2 year old Apple device display failed badly and was also quoted a S$700-800+ S$140(fee for detailed check). This is equivalent to buying a new device. Ridiculous pricing especially since so many of us encounter the same issue.

According to the Apple support team I contacted, it's an LCD malfunction and the only solution is to replace it.

What they didn't say was why this problem is occurring after two years of using the iMac on so many computers.

So, as Apple hasn't yet assumed that it's their fault, what I did, given the lack of concrete answers from Apple, was to take my iMac to a technician and ask him to assess the problem to see if it's a construction problem or just a random fault.

The explanation I was given was as follows:

In terms of circuitry, everything seems to be working properly.

The problem, apparently, lies in a cable that also powers the LCD, which is located on one of the tops of the screen, and which, to be replaced, requires detaching the screen glass from the LCD itself, which is a very sensitive operation and almost impossible to carry out without damaging the LCD.

So the only option is to replace the entire LCD (LCD+main boards+screen glass).

Also, according to the technician's explanation, this cable (of the FFC/FPC type or Flat Flexible Cable / Flexible Printed Circuit), has to sustain a very high voltage (around 50V) to power the LCD (despite the iMac's power supply being 15.9V), and it heats up a lot!

So, what happens after a while (in this case after about 2 years) is that it starts to burn out and degrade at the connector, to the point where it lets the signals leak between the various connectors and short-circuits some of them, which ends up causing those lines that we are all unfortunately familiar with.

The level of brightness makes a fundamental contribution to this problem. Thus, the higher the brightness used, the sooner the problem occurs.

This is easily understood by measuring the difference in temperature at the top of the screen when it is at its lowest brightness level, compared to when it is at its highest. It's quite a big difference!

When it's at its lowest brightness, it's practically room temperature; when it's at its highest, you can almost fry an egg!

I think that as soon as Apple recognizes that there is a problem with these computers, the first thing it will do is make a change to the OS that reduces the maximum brightness limit allowed (to less than 500 nits). Time will tell...

Why does this happen?

For at least one of three reasons:

1- a design flaw - so this problem is likely to occur in a large number of devices;

2- a defect in components - the problem is limited to a few cases;

3- use of components below Apple's standards - the problem may be limited, or more widespread.

This was the explanation I was given. I'm not a technician. Only Apple will know the exact reason(s).

If I had to guess, I'd say that I don't believe it's a design fault, because Apple has an obligation to be very careful about that; I also don't think it's a fault with the component(s) because it seems to be happening all over the planet and doesn't seem to be localized; so I think it's due to the use of component(s) below, or at the limit of, Apple's standards which, when put under extreme stress (higher brightness), end up failing.

I think it's already clear to everyone that this is a design or manufacturing defect in this Apple model.

So let's hope that Apple takes on this construction problem and repairs it or at least contributes part of the cost of the (overly expensive) repair of our computers.

If it were a car, surely all our computers would be called into the workshop to replace the component that has broken down or is in the process of breaking down.

As it's a computer... let's hope that Apple will behave in a way that suits its customers, who believe in the above-average Apple standard...

So keep presenting your cases to Apple.

To figure this out you need an external display. Does the effect show up on it? If it does the logic board will need replacement, if the image is clean that proves the display is bad.

When did you buy the system? If you know what is your countries warranty period as well.

Where do you live? Country and nearest major city. Also do you have access to an Apple Store as clearly this provider failed you.

Hi, thank you, External Display => Works fine. I feel it's due to M1 chip, may be I have to apply the thermal paste? The thing is, lines are not fixed, it moves up and down. I am also noticing that it's getting better but very slowly. Some of the top lines are gone.

I live in India, southern side. Apple does not have proper support in here, most of them are third party, they mostly just replace parts. It's an authorized one. Warranty is over, Apple instead of providing a replacement sticks to dump warranty of 1 year. Just in two years I had to replace the entire board and the now this display. Now were near apple standards.

さんによる

@latv - Not good😢

Sadly, repasting won’t fix this. The M1 chip is not the problem!

If the external display is fine that points to a bad internal display. You need a new display.

さんによる

Thank you, looks like I am stuck with it, apple won't even replace the product. The service guys said they are not sure if it's a display problem, they said they will invoice it after replacing the display. If that's the case I am better of buying a new one. The invoice that I have now is almost the half. That's Apple.

さんによる

This GPU drives the external display? Which makes the problem being the faulty display unit?

さんによる

@latv - Correct, one graphics engine which pushes the video output to both displays. This is a simple test! While a pain maybe you need to educate him. Bring the system and the external and have him see this.

I swear you’ve proven it! There is no other cause here. Something is messed up with the display it’s self.

I am having the same problem. I've had this iMac less than two years. These lines appeared a couple weeks ago and have shifted a bit but haven't disappeared. From what I'm seeing online, we are not the only ones experiencing this. This is not right. Apple should be held accountable for this issue.

Hey brother I have a similar issue with mine just lines on different parts of the screen. I spoke to the local store he said they had 5 cases of this come to him this seems to be a manufacturing issue and even if we pay and fix the screen it's likely that will happen again in 1-2 years.

I feel we should all get together and file a case to get APPLE to take responsibility for the faulty product.

Having same issue after 2.6 years of using my IMAC M1 24". I leave in Mumbai, India. Took it to Apple store. They charged 2500 INR for checkup and gave 54000 INR quotation to replace new screen. Local service centers charging around 45000

Have anyone notice the top right corner of screen feel very hot when touched. I strongly feel its over heating issue or Flex cable problem. I would have opened and checked it myself but I dont have tools to open the iMAC and assemble it back.

Yes issue for me. Don't open the iMac, it's a display issue. The heating is happening at the connector. Do this instead, don't open, apple maintains a monopoly in repair business for apple products in India, no spare parts is available.

Heating is going to happen at multiple points and the lines are going to show up 3 positions. It will shift.

File a consumer case with proof of screenshot from others. Use an external display until case the solved.

さんによる

This is helpful to me as I have the exact same issue after 2 yrs of use of this product.

hey friends!

I believe we can fix this together!

Your feedback seems to be making a difference.

I just got off a call with Apple senior advisor Katerine, she mentioned she sees the evidence and agreed there is something very unusual with this product. She is forwarding it to the engineers for investigation.

This can very well become documented and resolve this for all others in the future!

So please make sure everyone posts your cases at this link with your pictures. She said they don't care about other domains only the threads on Apple.com are taken seriously.

This is VanCity From MacForum.

That was very sketchy how Apple locked the forum. There was an active conversion that same day, and they locked it. It was not due to inactivity, it was due to hyper activity and I assume some other back-end reasons they shut it down.
