Can I replace this display and it work

Got in my first M1 for a display replacement. I see iFixit is selling the part but will it actually work? I understand Apple may have stopped third party repairmen from doing this.

Mayer, how did you go with this in the end? I am in a similar position.. my macpro M1 2020 13inch needs a new screen.. I want to do myself but I have seen comments saying that Apple need to 'configure' it....

Hi Mayer,

Yes and no! A used display in the M1 systems does work, a virgin display fresh off the assembly line won’t work as the firmware is not loaded at the factory.

So using the iFixit part should be fine.

M2 systems now have parts serialization forcing one to use Apples part.

This answer confused me. You're saying that a used part will work, but a new part needs to be configured.. if so, why would the ifixit part be fine?

I have a 2020 M1 Pro 13 inch and need a screen... can I buy one from ifixit and fit myself and have it work? or would it need to be done by Apple so they can "configure" it to make it work?

I'm a little confused...

@mikedsilva - Apple uses a two part setup on their displays. Think it like how epoxy works!

There is a A part and a B part. The epoxy won’t work with just one part as only when the two parts are combined will it cure.

So here we have the hardware and the firmware. One without the other won’t give you a working display.

A used display will have both pieces, a part that fell off the delivery truck exiting the hardware maker won’t have the other piece which is needed! The firmware!!

But Apple didn’t stop there… the M2 based systems are now serialized so you are forced to use only the Apple suppied part.

um, i'm still a little unsure. Ifixit only sells new parts right? Why would theirs be fine to work if a new Apple production screen wouldn't?

Also, there are a few guides on utube showing M1 2020 screen replacement, and lots of comments saying they did it too but not one person (or the video publisher) mentions having to have firmware ie the 2nd part of your epoxy analogy above.

I got a brief message from someone else who suggested that the 2020 M1 is possibly OK to go, but that the M2 products are def Apple Only.

Check out this vid... and the comments...

I'm not trying to argue, I'm trying to find out 100% if it can be done wthout needing Apple store.. if so, I will order a screen and have a go.

Again, I have a M1 2020 13inch macbook pro touchbar...
