Phone dead after battery and display replacement

The phone gets stuck in boot loop only when plugged in charge. Shuts completely off if unplugged. I think I might have damaged the charging port flex cable. Any suggestions?

What you're describing typically is what happens when the battery is not plugged in. I would check your battery connection first and look for any damage to the connector or the board in that area.

Second this. Also try the old battery again just in case if you are 100% sure the new battery is firmly connected.

I’ve already tried the old battery and it does the same thing. I’m hoping it’s the lightning flex cable

When you say it's in a boot loop, can you be more specific? There are a couple of types we see on iPhones; there's the one where you see the Apple logo on the screen for a while then it reboots. In the other scenario, the phone boots all the way up and then reboots every three minutes.

If you're seeing the second one, then the cause of the reboot will be logged in the analytics as a panic log. See @flannelist's excellent Wiki article on how to retrieve the panic log, then post the first page of the log here and we can help you diagnose the issue.

If you don't get past the logo, then you'll definitely want to try out the previous suggestion of putting the old battery back in and seeing if the phone goes back to it's previous behavior. If you don't have the original battery I'd suggest going ahead and buying an new one; there's always the possibility you got one with a bad BMS board.

It's only after verifying that the replacement battery isn't the issue that I'd have a serious look at replacing the lightning port flex assembly. None of those repairs are going to be too expensive, so they're well worth a try.

Note that starting with the iPhone XS, Apple began pairing the battery to the logic board. The only way to keep the battery health information available is to save the original Battery Management System (BMS) and solder it onto a new battery cell. Unfortunately it will still have the old battery information unless you plug it into a device programmer, something like the QianLi iCopy, and use that to reset the cycle count and health percentage.

Update (07/06/23)

@korhit That is a possibility, but the only flex cable that runs under the battery itself is the wireless charging coil and the volume buttons that share a connector. Try unplugging the wireless charging coil and see if that affects your ability to boot. Here's a picture of the connector to unplug.

It does not go past the apple logo only when plugged in charge. Yes I have tried the old battery but it doesn’t work. Btw I forgot to mention that I wasn’t able to pull off the adhesive off the old battery so I had to work my way around with a spudger and slowly lift up the battery. Maybe i damaged the lightning flex in that process.

Just installed a new charging flex and also tried your option. Nothing changed, the phone gets stuck the Apple logo boot then shuts off when I unplug it from the charge. It’s like it’s not detecting a battery.

@korhit I haven't run into this myself, but some of the guys who do this sort of thing for a living have seen cases where small components right next to the FPC connectors on the motherboard get knocked off and cause problems.

So I'd say the next step is to get out the old magnifying glass and a bright light and check all around the battery and display connectors looking for missing parts. If you can get some good pictures that might help.

I have had this problem with a dodgy screen, or one of the grounding clips are bent, have you tried the original screen? I would take the whole thing back to original stock and see if it’s still looping, plug it in a pc and see if it disconnects continuously if the screen is totalled

News. After i installed the new charging flex, it wasn’t working anyways. I tried the old battery again and now it seems to be working fine. Looks like I have broken the charging flex and also bought a defective battery. Very unlucky. Now i just need to try a new battery and see how it holds up 🙏🏻
