Why do the speakers sound wrong sometimes?

I have an original Nintendo DS with speakers that sometimes sound wrong, like the sound is somewhat distorted. It can be noticed in the startup sound. They do not always sound wrong though, only sometimes at seemingly random points. From what I've read online, this could be due to a battery problem, but I'm not sure.
