Will the replacement battery charge to 100%?

I just purchased a replacement battery for my iPhone 11, the instructions were spot on and the tips were helpful. However upon the first charge the iPhone only shows 91% and will not charge to 100% it’s been charging for almost 9 hours (overnight). Is this normal?

Looks like fake charging. The battery % is moving? Down or up?

Battery percent is moving up while charging and down while not charging.

Sounds like a bad BMS (Battery Management System) board within the battery.

Thank you for your replies,

After doing the calibration procedure for a couple days in a row the charging percentage has finally reached 100%.

I was also hoping to have a little better battery life out of a new battery, (I’m still draining it within a day). I’m assuming this could still be related to the BMS board. Is there anything I can do to test this without some specialized equipment?

Thank you,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

If you used the iFixit Battery Replacement guide for this phone, then you may have seen the information in the preface talking about the need to calibrate a new battery in order to get accurate battery charge readings.

So my question is to ask whether or not you did the calibration procedure as outlined in the guide.

Battery Calibration - iFixit

If you don't calibrate, then the phone will still be working off the data from the old battery and will miscalculate how much charge the battery has at any given time. Calibration resets that information so that it's correct for the current state of the battery, which of course has now changed with the new battery in place.

So yeah, charge it as high as it'll go, use it until it dies, then charge it again. Won't hurt at all to do that a couple of times more even; that'll ensure the phone has the most accurate data on the battery that's possible.

Jerry,

I did read the calibration procedure. I replaced the battery (from ifixit), then charged the phone overnight (battery had about 30% when I turned the phone on after replacement and before plugging into the charger, then it was plugged into a charger uninterrupted for roughly 9 hours). Upon unplugging it in the morning battery read 91% so I plugged it back into a power bank and went on with my day.

About three hours later it was still at 91% so I unplugged it and used the phone throughout the day until the battery ran out of charge last night. The phone was plugged into a charger overnight again (about 8.5 hours) and was at 93% this morning.

Does this seem like normal behavior?

Thank you for your response,

Daniel

It should straighten itself out after a couple of charging cycles, so if it doesn't I'd suggest getting in touch with the iFixit Store personnel; they have a very good warranty on their products and stand behind them. For batteries the warranty is good for a year. You can reach them at support@ifixit.com.

Jerry,

I have gone through the the calibration process a few times now, as of this morning I woke up and the phone was at 100%. So, you are correct and that seems to have straightened itself out.

I do have one more question, the reason for me getting a new battery is because my original battery was only holding a charge for about half the day. When purchased the phone a few years ago it was holding a charge for 2+ days.

I understand it all depends on usage and it is not easily quantifiable, but I’m still fairly easily draining the battery in less than a day. I know as electronics get older they run less efficiently, batteries don’t last, as apps and programs get updated they use more ram/cpu space, etc.

I was hoping for a little bit better battery life between charges. So my question is could this be related to the battery percent acting weird, or is this just something I can expect with an older phone?

Thank you,

Daniel

@danielrowan I think you've quantified the issues with older phones pretty well, but I would argue that solid state electronics don't really "wear out"; in general they keep the same characteristics through their lifetime, so just because an electronic device is older doesn't mean it needs more power.

If you're up for an experiment, you might consider doing a full backup of your phone, followed by a restore to factory settings. Sign back in and use it without all the stuff you've installed over the years and see what the battery life is like when it's back to its original state.

If that makes a big difference then you could try installing/uninstalling apps and/or checking each apps battery usage until you identify the one or two or so that are sucking up the battery life.

@amber thank you for checking in, it seems as though @dadibrokeit was correct in that the problem will correct itself after some charge cycles. I’ve been letting the phone die and then charge uninterrupted for the last month or so and with moderate use of the phone I get about 32 hours out of the battery before it dies again, which is significantly better than the 8 hours I was getting before the battery replacement and about 12-15 hours immediately after the replacement.

That being said, I don’t know enough about it to determine if there is a problem in the internal logic board on the battery itself but everything seems to be working currently. So far I’m happy with the product and very pleased with the ifixit community.

Thanks all,

Daniel
