MacBook trackpad occasionally behaves erratically

So I've had my 2015 Macbook Pro for about 7 years now. The trackpad has been (occasionally) behaving erratically for the last 2 years or so. Out of nowhere the cursor would quickly move up and down on its own performing random clicks and multitouch gestures. I'm convinced it's a hardware fault because I've had this happen even on my bootcamp installation as well as the boot select screen.

What's interesting is that I experience such behavior once every few months. The issue persists for many hours, even upon restarting, resetting SMC (not sure that has any effect) and eventually returns back to normal, only to reappear a few months later.

I found an app called FingerMgmt that displays all inputs received from the trackpad and it was interesting to see my trackpad registering false inputs from the right side and made a screen recording for reference.

What could be the cause of this and how could I fix it? I haven't spilled anything of my Macbook and the only time I opened it up was to replace the SSD.

EDIT: As requested, here's an overview of my battery condition

Update (06/26/23)

As @danj suggested, I decided to go ahead and replace the battery on my MacBook Pro, and while I was at it, I also removed the trackpad to inspect it. It was full of dust, some hair and other nasty stuff that had settled there over the years. I cleaned it off as best I could before reinstalling it to the computer. I suspect this accumulation of dirt is the culprit and I'll confirm in a few months if the issue doesn't reappear.

The cause of the problem was the accumulation of grime and debris underneath the trackpad after many years of use. I cleaned the perimeter of the trackpad with a cotton swab, some alcohol and compressed air, being particularly careful around the thin ribbon cables connecting the glass surface to the logic board. At the time of writing it's been 7 months since the cleaning and the problem is completely fixed.

Given your system age it could be the battery pressing from below. Let’s check the battery using this great app CoconutBattery take a snapshot the apps main window with the battery tab opened and post it here for us to see.

Well the battery is shot! Batteries only offer 1k of cycles. Determine battery cycle count for Mac laptops I’m sure it’s a bit swollen at this point.

Here’s the needed battery MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Early 2015) Battery and the guide to put it in MacBook Pro 13インチ Retina Display Early 2015 のバッテリーの交換

FYI - My own 2015 systems are now on there third battery each!

Oh well... I've actually been considering replacing the battery for quite a while but I always postponed it out of fear of my trackpad malfunctioning afterwards (and those glued in monsters are a pain to work with from what I've been reading).

@guard3 - it’s not too bad using the solvent and steady pull. You do need a bit of patience!

Take a pic of the battery before you pull it, let’s see how swollen it is. One of mine was pushing so hard the bottom cover screws pulled through.

Edited the question again to include photos of my battery (also took the opportunity to give my MacBook a much needed cleaning). Does it look too bad?
