Replacing a modular USB component on motherboard

Hi there,

First time posting so apologies for any errors.

I recently purchased one of these laptops second-hand because I'm going on holiday soon and up until now I didn't have a functional laptop. It was in good quality for a fair price, save for one problem: the two USB ports on the right-hand side of the laptop are non-functional.

This isn't a major problem since I have a USB hub I can use but I decided to open the laptop up to see if there was anything I could do about it. I have novice-level experience with repairing laptops so I hoped I could spot any obvious errors. I didn't have any luck with repairing the USBs but I did notice that the section of the motherboard they are connected to appears to be modular:

I am confident in my ability to replace it but the problem is I have no idea what this part is called, let alone where I would begin looking for a replacement (or if it's even modular at all). Does anyone know what this part is?

Thank you in advance.

Hi @jayeff

Thanks for your response. I had a friend come over and identify the problem was the ribbon cable connecting to the IO board had fallen out. No idea how or why that happened, but the problem is solved now. Thanks anyway for your help

Hi @k_str_l

First check if power is being supplied by the USB ports by plugging in a mobile phone or a USB mouse with a laser light

If there is no indication of power being supplied to these devices i.e. mobile phone doesn't start to charge or the mouse laser LED doesn't turn on, go into Device Manager - Universal Serial Bus Controllers - click on > to expand the list - right click a USB Root Hub entry in the list - Properties - Power Management and check that the checkbox that states "Allow the computer to turn off this device" is unchecked.

If it is checked, uncheck it, and click OK.

Do this for all the Root Hubs listed in USB controller category in Device Manager.

Then restart the laptop in the normal manner and check if the USB ports now work OK

To get to Device Manager in Win10/11, press the Win key and x key (both together) and click on the Device Manager link that is in the menu options box that appears.

If the USB ports still don't work and all of the listed USB Root Hubs' Power Management settings have been unchecked, here's the owner manual for the laptop. Go to p.40 to view the procedure to remove/replace the IO board

Replacement boards are available online. Search for Dell G3 3590 IO board to find suppliers that suit you best.
