Need help diagnosing problem with microphone

In the past day my microphone has become nearly inaudible (and possibly of poor quality) to anyone listening over multiple different programs. I’ve tested the headset on another computer and it works fine. I’ve tried reinstalling drivers to no avail. At this point I’m worried there is physical damage to the audio port. I’m always gentle with the PC but I am scratching my head as to what else could be the source of the problem and how it could be fixed.

Audio still comes through the headset as normal. Since I initially posted the question the computer fails to register any audio whereas before it was simply incredibly faint.

Hi @redhanded,

What is the make and model number of the motherboard?

Is the microphone connected to the front case mic connector or to the rear panel connector (if applicable)?

@jayeff The motherboard is a MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 Micro ATX LGA1700. The microphone is connected to the front case mic connector and has been throughout the time I have been using it.

Hi

Have you tried cleaning the inside of the port with some isopropyl alcohol or contact cleaner?

Make sure your machine is off when doing it but this can help remove and debris that way be causing a dodgy connection

I would also check that it hasn’t come loose from the board

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

Hi @redhanded

The front panel audio ports are connected via a cable from the jacks on the audio bracket to the motherboard header pins on JAUD1 - see user manual p.23 for location and pinout.

Check if the cable is securely connected to the motherboard header pins

Assuming that you have a separate mic input and headphones output socket on the front panel you could always try connecting the mic to the back panel mic input ports(see p.15 of user manual) just to check that the mic input is working in the PC.

If the rear mic audio is OK you may have to remove the front panel audio bracket from the case and check that the wiring is all OK to the mic jack.

It could just be a mic jack problem. There's an internal contact in the jacks that sends a signal to the audio controller to let it know when a plug has been inserted or removed - JAUD1 pin 6 = mic detection and sometimes the contact gets jammed and it doesn't work. You'll notice that it's the same for the headphones JAUD1 pin 10 = headphone detection

If you determine that it is the mic jack itself that is the problem it would be quicker and easier to replace the entire front panel audio bracket (examples only) than to find the exact replacement mic jack.
