Battery and charger replaced but still not charging correctly.

A couple of weeks ago my MacBook Air decided not to charge, I had a look at the battery and realised that it needed to be replaced because it was slightly swollen

I installed a new battery and plugged in the charger but there were no signs of life, no charger light and the Mac would not turn on. I decided to replace the charger.

I plugged in the new charger and there was an orange charging light on the MagSafe connector however, when I checked a couple of hours later there was no orange charging light but the Mac had power, I turned it on. The charging indicator on the desktop showed that the battery was being charged, I continued charging upto 100%.

Thinking that all was ok I let the battery drain until the Mac turned itself off. Now the charger is plugged in to the Mac, there is no charging light on the MagSafe connector but the Mac will turn on.

The desktop indicator shows that the battery is being charged but has only reached only 1% and that is where it stays.

If I disconnect the charger the Mac turns off

I have inspected both the MagSafe connectors, they're clean.

I have tried a couple of different power outlets at my home, no difference.

I can use the Mac, the Magic Mouse is ok, the keyboard is ok, I can connect to WIFI.

  • What else could be causing this problem?
  • How can I correct this?

Update (01/11/2023)

Hello Dan,

I downloaded the coconutbattery app onto my Mac, here's the snapshot (hopefully).

Many thanks,

Paul Cook

Well you do have a problem! The battery is not charging up at all! Let’s give this a try. Shutdown the system and carefully disconnect the battery. Now with nothing plugged in press and hold the power button for a good 15sec so you can fully drain the logic boards charge. Now plug in the MagSafe charger did the connector light up Amber or Green? And the system might spontaneously boot up on its own, if it does let’s it bootup and then do a proper shutdown. Then reconnect the battery and try starting it upmagain and tell us what the color of the MagSafe connector is now.

If this didn’t change things then we need to checkout the MagSafe connection both the cord and the system.

Also a common issue is using a knockoff charger! That could have done you in. So unless you got it directly from Apple in its original packaging it’s suspect.

Hello Dan, I followed your instructions to disconnect the battery and drain the logic boards, afterwards I plugged in the MagSafe connector but it did not light up at all. I did start the Mac in this condition and to my surprise it worked! I did not know that would happen....

I changed the new battery for the old battery and followed the same procedure and ended up in the same place however, the desktop battery indicator shows 21% charge but it is not increasing when the MagSafe is connected.

Anyway, both the new battery and MagSafe charger are not genuine Apple products. The battery cost US$23 and the MagSafe charger US$13, both items were purchased online in Jakarta Indonesia which is 100km from where I live.

I think my next step is to find a store where they have a 'working' MagSafe charger and plug it in to my MacBook and see what happens however, that is easier said than done in Indonesia.

Thank you once again for your advice.

@mistercook - Good luck! Try replacing the MacBook Air 11" (Late 2010) I/O Board following this guide MacBook Air 11" Late 2010 I/Oボード交換 this series has the MagSafe built-in into it. If that fails you need some logic board repairs.

Hi Dan, I will check the price and delivery for the I/O board and install it. I will let you know the outcome in due course. If ever you are in Indonesia and you need a hand with something, let me know, it would be a pleasure to return the favor.

@mistercook - Thanks! I do miss seeing all of the beauty it has, both land and sea! And of course the people!
