Is pre setup needed before upgrading the M.2 typed SSD into iMac?

rying to upgrade the blade SSD with Samsung 1TB m.2 2280 type SSD with the Apple connector adaptor, however, heard that the M.2 typed ssd needs to be setup first (with enclosure) before physically installing on logic board in iMac, otherwise, it won't be recognized at all. So, just checking is this really necessary? If it is the case, is there any particular reason why it won't be recognized initially?

Any one has experience on this in the past?

What is your current drive? If you have a HDD then All you need is to upgrade the OS to at least High Sierra (10.13.x) first as the systems firmware needs an update.

You’ll want to create a bootable OS installer USB Thumb drive in any case and use it to information and install the OS onto the SSD drive.

Frankly, I don’t recommend using M.2 SSD’s in iMac’s given how hard it is to get to it and that don’t last very long. More so if you are into anything with heavy graphics.

@ dan - Hello Dan, the current drive is just the SATA one (the old 3.5” mechanical drive) and Mojave is installed. I understand I need to create a bootable drive, but my question is still, do I need to have the M.2 SSD pre setup with Mac OS installed or I can just put it into logic board as other Apple blade SSD and finish Mac OS installing by booting into recovery mood?

No, case needed, that was only needed when you are swapping the blade SSD or if you where swapping out the SATA HDD for a SATA SSD.

Use the created bootable OS installer USB Thumb drive don’t use recovery as you’ll only have Yosemite as as option which will leave you high and dry as your SSD and HDD won’t be accessible under it.
