(While wired) Left side only working while pressing speaker button

Title basically says it all, if I press and hold the speaker button on the wire, I can hear the audio in both ears. Otherwise just the right side. I'm using it with an ipod classic so I can't do wireless. If it matters, these headphones used to be my dad's and he said he never got wireless to work anyway.

Edit: it's the right side that doesn't work properly, not the left (if it matters?)

When you say the speaker button do you mean the button the has the b on it?

@hellomacos No it's on the actual wire. To be honest I'm not sure what it does on this headset, like if it's for volume or activating an audio recording function or what, but I believe it could be called an audio or remote button?
