How to remove magnet stuck inside driver head

So, the story isn't long and it was me being dumb, but the magnet that comes with the case fell off and ended up inside the driver head, I tried super glue but it just doesn't stick. The driver does work, the bits fit but not all the way, any ideas on how to get it out?

Yes, but it is not without some risk.

  1. You can try blowing high pressure compressed air across the opening of the driver. This likely won't work and if it does, the magnet may be blown to where you couldn't find it. You could aim it toward a draped sheet and hope to catch it.
  2. You can do the following (more risky)
    1. Remove the endcap of the screwdriver. It is only a friction fit to an o ring in something very like a gas orifice.
    2. Hold the driver in a vise with padded jaws (preferably cork, but rubber should do)
    3. Remove the brass piece by using a straight slot driver in the slot in the top of the brass piece. Tap the piece smartly a couple of times to help it break free or you will chew it up. Get a good fitting driver to fit that slot.
    4. Using a pin punch (shown in photos) tap the magnet free from the driver toward the mouth of the driver
    5. The magnets should fall out along with some magnetic debris.
    6. Separate the magnets. Put the original driver magnet on a table with the shiny side down.
    7. Use a long steel rod, like a piece of a coathanger with a flush cut end to go down the barrel of the driver until the magnet grabs it. You can also just carefully turn the driver over while you hold the magnet in place.
    8. Use a bit or the punch (better) to return the magnet to its seat, tap it a couple of firm taps with a small hammer. it seems to stay in place.
    9. For more security, you might try dropping a small amount of iron filings down the tube from the other end along with a drop or two of cyanoacrylate glue This will likely bond sufficiently to hold the magnet more firmly.
    10. Screw in the brass piece (maybe with a bit of light duty threadlocker)
    11. Replace the endcap
  3. Pics In rough operation order. The second pic is the screwdriver (you might need a wrench to turn it) the third pic shows the brass insert out. The 4th pic shows the punch in use, while the pics after that show you the punch , how it is to be inserted, and and how you tap with a hammer. the last pic shows the magnet pulled out.

Hi

Wow,I never thought youse magnets came out XD

To get that one out I would get a pair of fine tipped tweezers and try and grab it

If that doesn’t work I would try a wooden cocktail stick/tooth pick to try and gently pry it on its side so that you can pull it out with some tweezers out from the driver

If all of the above doesn’t work I would probably try these special pry tools that iFixit sells(linked below

Probe and Pick Set

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)

I'd try this answer first myself, but if you can't get enough of a grip with the tweezers you can try to flip the magnet on its side with the picks then try the tweezers or a small pair truly needle nose pliers. if that doesn't work there's always the disassembly route I suggested below.

@billg66

Thanks for letting know about that, i never knew that they could be disassembles that far!

Thanks:-)

@hellomacos

Neither did I until I thought "How did they get the magnet in there in the first place?" Then I thought "You wouldn't want to press something like a magnet into a blind hole and you sure couldn't glue it from the hex end. Try cleaning that glue up. Then I thought about the spinner on the end, and pulled on it and away we went....Nobody puts a slot in the top of a part like that brass one for grins, it's costly.

@billg66

Very interestingly wonder if the newer revisions of the screwdriver are the same

There's barely any place for the tweezers to fit and grip, tried a needle to see how tight it is and I decided to disassemble, will give an update in a few days.

Use a neodymium magnet, the bigger the better and put it against where the magnet is and slowly ease it out. The magnets in the drivers aren't that powerful so a stronger magnet should overpower it.
