Progressive failures: bluetooth/wifi, screen, audio

iphone X has had a series of unfortunate events over the course of a year, in the following order.

  1. Bluetooth reception stopped working -- intermittently returns and will stay if the phone is not moved or jostled.
  2. Battery needed replacement. Wi-Fi chip was bad per diagnostics at Apple store at the time the battery was replaced.

# Wi-fi connectivity lost. Wifi grayed out. Returned once, just long enough for me to update iOS to 16.02.

  1. Screen intermittently unresponsive to touch. A reset will get in working again.
  2. Earpiece speaker became static-y and dim AND bottom speaker stopped working at the same time. Wired earbuds still work.

No known water exposures. Any likely culprits or common causes?

Based on the specific issues here, and the number of them, I suspect you've got an issue with separation between the two boards. It sounds like this has been mentioned in the comments already, but just for sake of clarity and some added info.

The WiFi chip is likely okay, The problem here sounds more likely that it cannot talk to the CPU or other components on the top board. This may also be the case with touch and Audio. All of these functions have lines that run between the two boards. In fact they all have lines which run along the bottom edge of the top board, which is especially prone to separation issues.

If the phone has experienced a heavy drop, or even just with the repeat flexion of everyday use, some of the solder connections separate. Many times the solder pads actually tear off the board altogether, leaving a tiny nubbin of a trace. See the included picture from an iPhone 12 where you can clearly see the spots where the copper traces should have attached to the solder pad. The force to tear the pad off these tiny copper lines is much less than to break the actual solder joint in most cases.

Good answer, Alisha. The variety of issues @punkinann is seeing could well be accounted for by breaks in the inter-board connectors.

I have seen repair guides that demonstrate fixing these pad issues, but those are definitely restricted to microsoldering experts who can take these boards apart and successfully repair and reassemble them.

So, Punkinann, if you don't mind spending a few bucks to try your own repairs, to me it would be worth it, but if they don't help it looks like you'll be needing an expert repair shop to do board level repair on your phone.

Let us know what happens, and if you do need that kind of service, come back and ask and I'm sure some of the repair technicians on here can suggest companies that can help.

@dadibrokeit Yep. These sort of torn pad repairs can be tedious, depending on the number that are damaged. Or what method you use. Torn pads are the bane of any microsolderer. On any board. But an all too common occurrence when board repairs are necessary.

@dadibrokeit and @flannelist, I replaced the speaker and it works now! I also replaced the Bluetooth antenna cable as you suggested, but sadly, crushed the connector for the new Wi-fi-antenna when putting back the logic board. So I had to put the original Wi-fi antenna back in. So no Wi-fi or bluetooth.

I'm debating whether to purchase another Wi-fi antenna and try again. The whole process took about 8 hours, at least 2 of which were spent cursing the tiny metal grounding bits that would stick to my screwdriver, 1 hour spent searching for tiny screws that flew from my tweezers onto the floor (2 never to be found again), again, and the last squinty 3 hours remembering stories of children in Pakistan going blind from making hand-knotted Oriental rugs (small fingers=smaller knots), and idly wondering how many people go blind assembling iPhones for a living. Think it's worth a try?

@punkinann Lol, yeah, I say go for it! I've done a lot of work on the iPhone X, including writing iFixit guides for it, because family members have them and the more I work on it, the easier it becomes. If you're going to be ordering parts anyway, consider getting a screw set to replace those missing ones. This one looks like a good choice.

Yikes, that's a lot going on with your phone!

Those problems you are seeing do not appear to have anything in common other than the fact that they're all connected to the motherboard. Combined with a diagnosis of a failing WiFi chip, the first thing that comes to mind is significant issues with the logic board.

Bluetooth/WiFi reception issues

That being said, it's also possible these are separate problems. There are two of your issues that could conceivably be related; the bluetooth and WiFi reception issues. There are antennas for both of those, combined into a single flex assembly that could conceivably be at fault.

There is another little piece of cabling that's labelled as a Bluetooth antenna that you might want to consider replacing at the same time.

Touch screen issues

The touch screen issue is puzzling. Normally you'll see a defective digitizer consistently fail; they don't usually come back after a reset, so I'm not sure what to suggest here. I'd probably start with opening up the phone and checking the digitizer connector; that's the one the spudger is pointing to in this picture.

You'll want to unplug it and take a magnifying glass and a bright light and check the connectors on both the motherboard and the cable for any bent, broken or missing pins. Also check the entire cable for any tears or crimps. If you find any damage on the cable or the cable's connector, the only solution is to replace the entire screen. Clean both connectors with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher; don't use the 70% stuff we all have around the house) and see if that makes any difference.

Earpiece speaker issue

The earpiece speaker is part of the front sensor assembly mounted on the display. Replacing the entire assembly will result in the loss of your Face ID function, as parts of that assembly are paired specifically to your motherboard and can only be replaced by Apple. However, if you can do a very small amount of soldering (or know someone who can), it is actually fairly easy to replace just the speaker by itself without losing Face ID. I got the idea from a guy on the internet who figured it out and wrote a guide for it.

I've done a lot of work in iPhone X's and if it was my phone I'd replace those four parts (both speakers and both antennas), check and clean the digitizer connector and see where I was. If the WiFi issue persists, there are repair shops that can swap out your WiFi chip; @hellomacos, can you confirm and/or offer any suggestions? (He's our go-to guy for microsoldering.)

Thanks! I'll try the fixes you recommended, maybe with the exception of the earpiece speaker. After I reset the network settings, and the wifi and bluetooth circles both turned blue again, so I'm hopeful it's the antenna.

Hi

For the microsoldering side of things I would recommend putting it in a ultrasonic cleaner as I have revived boards that are faulty or ones that seem dead by doing this :-)

I would only try and replace the WiFi chip on the logicboard if you have LOADS of experience or know a shop that specialises in these sorts of repairs for several reasons

1)The iPhone X uses a “sandwich” board ,this means that there are 2 boards that are soldered to each other (a bit like a sandwich XD)

2)Separating those boards is no easy task as you need a lot of heat to do this and there is a chance of reflowing something and it shorting off of a neighbouring component because of that

3)The WiFi chip is a small BGA(Ball grid array)chip on a small board so it would also need to be done by a professional and go back together without any issues

Of course if it was done correctly it could(no promises) work but if you do try it I would recommend the ultrasonic cleaner first as it could work and if the Bluetooth/WiFi functionality comes and goes it could sort it once and for all but like a said no promises as it could be a issue somewhere else on the Board:-)

Hi guys,

Just stumbled across this forum as I am having very similar issues with my iphoneX. Dropped my phone many times to the point where both front and back screens were severely smashed as therefore completely stopped working. I could not even unlock my phone to use it, the bottom half of my screen was unresponsive.

I then took my phone to a repair shop to replace the screens but since having my screens replaced the Bluetooth connects but doesn’t play properly and constantly crackles and drops out and my gps doesn’t work at all. It will find the route but the arrow doesn’t move when I move and it cant centre my exact location.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where I can get my iphone looked at by an expert please? I need someone in London ideally who is an expert at these sorts of issues. I’m no techie so any suggestions welcome.
