Phone only turns on when I disconnect lightning flex cable

Hi there!

I recently replaced a battery and also the flex lightning cable (for mic issues) in my old iphone 8. When i connect everything, only wireless charging seems to working but the phone won't turn on.

Here comes the weird part. When i disconnect the lightning flex cable from the logic board, the phone suddenly turns on and functions normally (besides of course things that are connected to the cable - speaker, mic, wired charging...).

Any ideas what might the issue here? I was thinking there's a problem with the logic board, but why would it turn on then?

PS: This is actually the second lightning port flex cable that i replaced there, because i screwed up the first one.

Hi Dominik,

I've had a similar problem with replacing an assembly that then didn't work correctly, and in my case it turns out I'd managed to bend a pin on the motherboard connector. Fortunately, I was able to use fine tip tweezers and straighten out the pin, after which everything started working again!

So my advice at this point would be to open your phone back up and unplug the dock connector. Examine both the motherboard and the cable connectors carefully with a magnifying glass and a bright light and straighten any bent pins you find. Clean it well with isopropyl alcohol (preferably over 90%).

When reassembling it, pay special attention to the note on Step 15 of the iPhone 8 Lightning Connector Assembly Replacement guide that talks about reattaching press connectors.

Hopefully it's something simple and you'll have your phone up and running again soon! Let us know how it goes, and be sure to ask more questions if you have them.

Haven't had much time yet to diagnose it properly but I might have found the problem.

I tried connecting only the old flex cable (i mangled the tiny antenna connector on it) into the motherboard connection and into a charging cable and voila - it was charging!

From that i am guessing that the new flex cable was somehow faulty, i'll try get a new one (again...) and hopefully fix it with this.

It's either that i imagine or something on micro level that i probably won't be able to fix anyway.

BTW i tried looking into the connections themselves and i did not see any bent pins or anything like that.

I don't use it anymore since i got Iphone 11 recently, but would be nice to have something incase this one breaks down or just give it to some family member.
