Black screen, mouse still shows up

I’ve been having problems with my Mac for a while, but recently I tried to restart my MacBook and it ended up just giving me a black screen with only the cursor on it. The keyboard still lights up sometimes, but it won’t let me manually shut it down, even when charging. Any suggestions for fixing it?

mmm ... This is an odd one! The fact you see the curser on the screen tells us the touchpad input via the T2 chip is working and the input to the Intel graphics engine is working (if you see the movement as you move the curser) as well as the internal displays input and its display as well. That only leaves the main processor logic which appears to have failed.

Lets dig a bit deeper here can you get the onboard diagnostics working? Lets do a forced shutdown by holding the power button down for a good 20~30 secs, release the button and now press and hold the D key and press the power button again to enter into the onboard diagnostics. Did it enter? Did you get any errors?

Yeah, the cursor is able to move and everything, the background just stays black. I tried your suggestions, but it seems like no matter what I do, my MacBook won’t shut down. Even if I hold the power button down for 20-30 seconds or longer, nothing changes. In the past I’ve tried to leave it on long enough that it runs out of battery and restarts that way, but it doesn’t seem to be losing battery quickly this time. Thanks for your help so far!

@Joey Ferguson - That makes things harder ;-{

Lets do this follow this guide thru to Step 13 MacBook Pro 13インチ Two Thunderbolt Ports 2020 バッテリーの交換 with things still disconnected press the power button holding it for a good 15secs to fully discharge the logic board. Now carefully reconnect things, now you should be able to start the system up. Don't forget to press the D key to enter into diagnostics. Did you get that far?

I just disconnected and reconnected the battery, then tried to turn it back on. It didn’t turn on, but that might be because of the fact that my Touch ID power button hasn’t worked in a while. Would it naturally turn on once opened up, meaning that I did something wrong with reconnected the battery, or do I need to fix my power button?

Nevermind, upon charging it boots up! Thanks so much for all of your help!

@Joey Ferguson - Just to close this out on what happened lets take a deeper look at your battery, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法

Normally I would default to a software problem with this sort of fault, but if you cannot actually turn the machine off, that could make fixing it difficult. When you press the power button do you get any response? Does the display shut off at all? What sort of issues were you having previously? (Sorry for the barrage of questions, I just tend to ask them all at once to avoid endless back and forth )

It is starting to sound to me like this may be a hardware issue, assuming you have already tried things like SMC or NVRAM reset. It may be time to have a look at your MacBook’s innards (or have someone else look) I am wondering specifically about the power button area since you don’t seem to be getting a response from the button.

This model has a small daughterboard which the Touch ID button connects to and I have seen little bits of liquid get in there more than once and muck things up or just make machines act really weird. It may also be worth opening, just for the sake of disconnecting the battery if nothing else, since that will forcibly reset the SMC.

I’ve disconnected and reconnected the battery, and it did shut down but it won’t turn back on now. I tried to remove my Touch ID power button like a normal key but it doesn’t appear to come off as easily, should I keep trying it or is there another way I should use? Thanks so much for your help!

@Joey Ferguson Excellent!

For future reference, the power button on these comes out totally differently. It's actually not even part of the keyboard assembly, so can't take the keycap off, since it's built differently than the rest of the keyboard.

If you have had issues with your Touch ID, it may be worth looking into at some point. But the thing about Macs is that's not the only way to power them on. Just means if you can't shut it off, you might run into this sort of issue.
