How can I disassemble the trimmer head to sharpen the blades?

I want to sharpen the blades in the trimmer head after removing it from the body. I don’t see an obvious way to open the trimmer head. Has somebody figured out how to do this?

Hi Donnie,

Aren't most of these blade self sharpening? What does the manual say?

I don't think so, I've been using it for a few years and it's definitely gotten duller. I did make the mistake of not oiling it enough for sure. The manual doesn't say anything about sharpening, but I've seen YouTube videos for other trimmers that show you how to sharpen blades with sandpaper or whetstone.

@donniel

As an experiment, if you like, maybe lightly oil with a sewing machine oil and let it run on its own for a full charge and see if any improvement. Worth a try. "Nothing ventured nothing gained."

That's a good idea! I've actually just bought Wahl's clipper oil, so I'll try oiling the trimmers and running them a while to see if they get any sharper.

There is actually a seam on the head itself on my 3100. It took a headlamp and magnifying glass to see it. It can be separated with the help of a razor blade. From there the blade drive can be disassembled by using a needle nose pliers to move the tension spring to each respective side. Upon disassembly I do not see how these blades are self sharpening but the assembly of mine was heavily impacted with tiny beard stubble that may have been affecting the sitting tension on the blade drive assembly. I thoroughly cleaned it and reassembled it and am now running it through a battery cycle to see if it'll sharpen the blade. Time will tell. Hope this helps someone. I know it's an old post.

Thanks! This helped me figure out how to open the head to get to the blades!

the 5100 has a couple screws, but with the precision of those blades, I am betting it will be a futile exercise to attempt to sharpen them.

I have the 3100, which unfortunately doesn't have the removable screws in the head attachment unlike the other models :(

Were the blades of the 5100 not easy to sharpen?
