iMac Pro requires constant revival

I have a 2017 iMac Pro (A1862) that mostly works great. But, if I shut it down or lose power for any amount of time, it won’t power up again until I do a “Revive” using Apple Configurator 2. As I understand it, revive resets the firmware on the T2 Security chip. Any ideas why this might be happening? Is there a coin battery inside that (if replaced) might fix this problem? Thanks!

Yep, it sounds like your battery needs replacement. Not sure how easy it is to get to without removing the logic board.

You might be able to get to it via the RAM access door.

As to why I’m guessing you have an anti-vampire power strip which is slowly killing your system Standby Power All iMacs leverage a small trickle to hold its settings, even still Mac’s have a backup battery so you don’t loose the settings when moving the system or when you have a power outage. Even still the battery has a life span when you are always using it. The battery has a lifespan of about five years as long as you are still using standby power.

Thanks for that detailed response! There is no RAM access door on this one. I did pull it apart though and found the coin battery. It's a "BR2450A", quite a bit bigger than a 2032. I have one on order and will update this once I have it back together.

@russ - Sorry, forgot the Pro model doesn't have a door. I couldn't find any info for the battery for your model so I thought Apple would have just continue using the battery they have used for years. So now I know better (hadn't needed to replace one yet)

I ended up using a CR2450 instead of the BR2450A. They are the same diameter, but the BR2450A has a small ridge around the outside. Because of that, the CR2450 was not an exact fit, but I managed to make it work. So far, it's been working perfectly. Thanks so much for you time and help @danj!

@russ Just an FYI, the different between the CR and BR variants of button cell batteries is largely in the chemistry. They are generally equivalent electrically in voltage and should be the same form factor? in theory? But the BR2450 is intended to have a longer shelf life due to a low self discharge rate. And is supposed to have a more constant output voltage. But I don't suspect you will notice a difference.
