Drill works until it has had moderate use, then dies

Drill is 5 years old, had moderate use. Drill 5 to 10 holes in wood or drive 5 to 10 longer screws and the drill stops working, battery strength lights flash. Leave it alone for 3 to 5 minutes and it works again normally. Do the same amount of work and it repeats. If you only drill 1 or 2 holes or drive 1 or 2 screws the drill does not misbehave. A tool only replacement is $100 CDN and an upgrade to 1/2” is only $30 more with charger and bag. The repair solution needs to be inexpensive parts wise and not epic to perform. I’m willing to try a fairly simple repair/servicing. Any suggestions??

Stopping then starting after a “rest” is a signature symptom of a thermal problem. Likely, the speed control circuit connected to the trigger.

However, with the battery lights flashing, that might indicate there is too much current being drawn by the tool and the battery has been shut down to protect it. The tool might have shorted windings. Economically, that may be a show stopper for a fix.
