Apple Extended Keyboard Repair Advice

I have an Apple Extended Keyboard, which works pretty well, except for the W key.

If I apply very little force, it sometimes does not work, maybe two out of ten strokes. If I apply excessive force, it works every time.

What is the recommended way to troubleshoot this type of issue? I removed the keycap, but didn't see anything obvious, such as signs of spilled liquid or excessive grime.

Sadly, the pads often corrode which is the end of the keyboard.

You might find the Silicone Dome is bad, but I have rarely found that as the case Type-F Silicone Dome - Standard

I'd like to know for sure what causes these keyboards to fail. I have to replace mine once or twice a year. I have been doing that for 12 years.

The video at Trying to FIX : Faulty Apple Keyboard Model A1243 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxiPxyLF...) suggest water being the cause of failure. I am not spilling anything on my keyboards. To me, they seem to just wear out. Once a key starts failing, the keyboard will be usuable for a few weeks. After that, there will be at least on dead key.

The keys that fail always are among the most used letters.

So, I dunno if the liquid thing is the whole explanation.

@carlarogers - dust, humidity or something in the air where your system lives is what I would focus on.

Is there any chance, if it's one single key that was destroyed from a single splash of water (which I know I did), to repair the connection? Or is it still not worth the hassle of taking it apart?

Mostly trying to keep it out of the bin and not throw away a whole keyboard into the landfill if I can.

I own a Apple A1243 Wired 2-USB. 2007

@allie56770 - Did you look at the YouTube vid? It’s a bit of work to take apart and depending how far you go you might not get it back together. Other than having a second keyboard to raid for parts there just isn’t much hope. Apple designed these as throw-away’s!

@Danj I did. But the video doesn't show putting anything back together, they just say "if it was a couple connections to repair it would be doable." A bit of work doesn't deter me too much for a single key if I could follow a step-by-step.
