iMac shutting down before progress bar finishes

Randomly invested in a $20 not powering on iMac A1125 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo with I'm guessing 4GB RAM (2 x 2G and Apple states capable of 8GB max though one seller I found has a 16GB max option), NVIDIA ? and 1TB HD with one other I can’t read option noted (see image in FB link below). Seems like a neat upgrade from the free eMac’s with Snow Leopard installed.

Read online what I could find, unplugged and held down the power button for ~1.5 minutes, plugged back into the wall 120VAC outlet and then pressed the Power Button to observe the Apple Icon with a progress bar that slowed down progressively to about 3/4’s the way stuck and then the iMac powered off after ~5-10mins. That’s all the computer would perform.

Read this link, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/847..., where nothing appeared to do anything other than the #3 (Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM) restarted the computer when I’d hold down the keys and #8 automatically performed, what holding down the <Option> or <Alt> booted to the two drives Untitled and Recover 10.11.5 and selecting Recover 10.11.5, to show the Apple Icon and the progress bar stuck halfway before powering off. I also, had to repeat the above unplug from wall outlet power button procedure after the recovery boot attempts.

Read also that upgrades can cause issues and since appears El Capitan was installed based on the Recovery drive title and Snow Leopard is more likely the circa OS X version… I’m guessing there is something wrong with the 10.11.5 install. Therefore, I’ve decided to download the 10.6 ISO and create a USB boot drive with to first Diagnose using Disk Utility as noted here: https://business.tutsplus.com/tutorials/...

I’m thinking I can also create a USB boot drive using Time Machine on one of the eMac’s… though don’t have a 10.6 DVD and thinking is a good idea to at least have the ISO available.

Any other observation of the causation of the symptoms I’m having?

Does anyone know if 16GB can be installed in the model I have?

Wondering if I need to replace the battery or like my first thought there might be something up with the PSU also like noted here:

Why doesn't my iMac boot up?

I don't notice any SMPS ticking sounds or smell anything burned. Guessing if I decide to install an SSD to replace the magnetic HD I'll perform a very thorough cleaning, replace the thermal paste on the CPU & GPU and possibly upgrade or hack in another fan with a 3D printed vent to flow more air through since does feel a little warm over the PSU.

Do you have a second mac system which you can connect to this system via FireWire? Understanding the Applications for Target Disk Mode

What you want to do here is reformat the drive to GUID journaled file system and then setup the proper OS onto your system. OS-X El Capitan 10.11.6 is the highest this system can support.

Get the needed OS installer from here How to get old versions of macOS and follow this guide to setup a bootable OS installer if your system is running something newer on your second system How to make a bootable OS X 10.11 El Capitan installer drive

I do have the eMac's that I forget which one of the bunch PSU is going bad. However, no FireWire cable. I'll read into and determine what I'd need to invest in to go that route.

Was thinking with what I have, I can make the Time Machine backup bootable disk however.

For now, decided to download the "snow leopard install.iso" from the internet archive so I have that for starters to work with.

Do you happen to know which version of OS X is the fastest to use with this older 2009 iMac?

Thanks for the El Capitan detail. The versions changes are really not enjoyable, especially not having a background with this type of OS and even to a significantly lesser extent hardware. Neat though how the Tektronix TDS-8000(B) I need to repair the PSU's at the least, have both PowerPC's and Intel boards.

Guessing I'm on the right track with a software OS corruption causation?

@jafinch78 - I really don't recommend downloading from just any source and more so with the older releases as there are ways to plant malware and spyware within them.

Stick with the Apple source I posted and I strongly recommend going with El Capitan as its the best for your system.

If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today

@danj - Didn't realize the source files referenced didn't require a previous OS X install. Reading, I assumed the .dmg's were only updates.

These are the sources I downloaded and they both checked out on https://www.virustotal.com/gui/ though wondering what is best for an online scanner regarding Mac files.

Found reading last night, TransMac allows for the OS X USB bootable drive's creation on a Windows machine where either via Command Prompt or TransMac the USB drive can be formatted.

- https://www.acutesystems.com/scrtm.htm (TransMac)

I recalled using an application, a decade or more back, on Windows XP Pro to backup data from Mac formatted drives I worked with that wasn't coming to mind (MacDrive or HFSExplorer). Reading around looks like TransMac is even better and more like PowerISO.

Setting up a USB thumb drive with TransMac is not easy! If I where you I would try to find a friend who owns a Mac to help me set it up. And I would only use the Apple images from the Apple servers!

@danj Decided to invest in a dedicated ~$5 USB thumb drive that is Mac formatted. Just setup the USB thumb drive with TransMac using the 10.6.3 .dmg file and was really easy. However, reading into more, a previous install is required using the 10.6.3 .dmg though I figured I'd try to use a downloaded from apple .dmg as you recommended to be safer. Interestingly, I'm not finding the links from the Apples site anymore for that file and am only able to find the 10.6.3 and 10.6.8 update files from Apple. Wishing I would have posted in the previous comments, so at least will post the update links for now.
