Touchscreen function unavailable (HP Omni 10)

I obtained a second hand Omni 10 years ago.

For as long as I’ve had it, its touchscreen capacity has been problematic, failing without notice rendering it unusable as a tablet.

The only information the device provides is the I2C HID driver not operating. Though everything is up-to -date (updated to Windows 10).

I’ve seen suggestions that bending the Omni 10 in a certain way helps, that the issue might be due to a digitizer connector ‘misfiring’, other than that, no proper solution -nothing coming from HP.

I’m looking for an indication for what can be done, I’d rather repair it/have it repaired than purchase an other tablet.

My bad. Serial number is: 5CD4082KV1

I don't see a 'Touchscreen entry'.

I’m using ‘Driver Booster 8’. All drivers are presented as up-to-date.

Touchscreen worked until a few days ago after I checked to see if it was the case -as I’ve put away my Omni 10 because it wasn’t previously.

It lasted less than a week, showing troubles rapidly to the point it no more works -again, other than that, the table works fine.

Hi @jizzlecizzle ,

What is the full model number of the tablet?

Is there a red cross or a yellow exclamation mark next to the touchscreen entry in Device Manager > Human Interface Devices?

Please verify the status of the touchscreen in Device Manager > Human Interface devices > right click on Touchscreen entry > Properties > General tab > Device Status box.

Hi, @jayeff.

I appreciate you reaching out.

A yellow exclamation mark is visible.

I have a 'device cannot start. (Code 10)' information in the 'properties' window.

Accompanied with:

'A request for the HID descriptor failed'

@jayeff , actually, I just realized the Bluetooth function does not work -no idea why and if it's related to the touchscreen problem.

Hi @jizzlecizzle

You didn’t provide the full model number so hopefully all Omni 10 models are the same.

A yellow exclamation mark usually means a driver problem.

Try this first:

If you can access the internet OK make sure that the PC is online and then go to Device Manager > Human Interface devices > right click on Touchscreen entry > and click on Update drivers and follow the prompts to allow the PC to go online to check for any updated drivers for the touchscreen..

If that doesn’t work or it says that the latest drivers are already installed then try this:

It it nearly the same as before but you are changing the controller type manually.

Go to Device Manager > Human Interface devices > right click on Touchscreen entry > and click on Update drivers. When following the prompts when you get to browse my computer, you'll have the option to "let me choose" and then you select usb input device instead of touchscreen controller.

Hopefully this will restore your HID touchscreen.

Hi @jizzlecizzle

OK it looks like you have a HP Omni 10-5600ef

Here's the maintenance and service guide for the tablet, taken from this webpage (note that the sku number at the end of URL on page matches what you provided which sort of verifies that it is the correct model)

All I can suggest is that you open the tablet and check that the touchscreen board cable is securely connected - see p.33-34. Maybe disconnect the cable at both ends? and clean the cable ends with Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ if it looks secure, just in case it is a dirty (corroded?) connection.

As always when working with electronics disconnect the battery from the motherboard (see p.22) as soon as it is accessible so as to prevent any electrical problems from occurring when using tools etc. Reconnect the battery as late as possible in the re-assembly procedure or only if you wish to test if it is now working OK but remember to then be careful!

Also wear an earthed wrist strap to help prevent ESD damage if you inadvertently touch some sensitive components when you shouldn’t have ;-)

The manual makes no mention of the Touchscreen "board" as a separate part in the parts list, only that it has a 10.1-in, AG, LED, WUXGA, TouchScreen, display panel assembly, so maybe the board is part of the display panel assembly.

Hi @jizzlecizzle ,

It's actually the model number not the serial number that is needed.

Try uninstalling BOTH 12C HID devices in Device Manager and then restarting the laptop and letting Windows find it and reinstall it again.

Go to Device manager > Human Interface Devices > right click on 12C HID device > Uninstall and follow the prompts. Remember to do both entries.

There is also some problems with the Ports (COM and LPT) so try updating the drivers for them as well or uninstalling and letting Windows re-install as perhaps these ports (the COM port anyway) "may" be used with the BT as well.

Also click on Device manager > View > Show hidden devices just in case there are other problems as well.

Just verifying that Win 10 is the OS also?

The product number: F4W58EA#ABF

No dice, the procedures did not work.

No other device with issue appeared after displaying all the hidden ones.

I've disconnected the touchscreen cable and fiddle with it.

It seemed to have worked and be the issue until I could not lock it in place with the ZIF connector on the system board.

I can't determine whether anything is broken, I'll bring it to a shop.
