Kernel panic when brightness is turned all the way up

So I saw a lot of people without any answers having the same problem: I have a 1.6GHz MacBook Air A1237, and apparently it kernel panics with “Invalid Backlight Duty Cycle” in the log whenever I turn the brightness all the way up.

I was wondering if maybe the display wasn’t the right one, maybe one for the late 2008 put in a early 2008 enclosure? And what could I do to fix it?

I already know of the “Downgrade the kext” way but I’d rather fix it completely rather than hack it, thanks for the help!

Need to stick with OS-X 10.5.2 Leopard on this series.

Apple didn't do a very good job in its test suite for newer OS-X releases. This is a OS issue not a hardware issue.

@danj but how does it make sense? Why would it do this? When you bought it when it came out it didn't do this before that's what I don't understand

And how would the invalid backlight duty cycle appear?

さんによる

@nar001 - The issue is the driver (kext) code. Apple upgraded the graphics services quite a few times overtime jumping from Intel to NVIDIA and then back to Intel. This driver needs to identify which graphics services the given system has so the proper code is used.

MacBookAir1,1 - Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100

> MacBookAir2,1 - NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

> MacBookAir3,2 - NVIDIA GeForce 320M

MacBookAir4.2 - Intel HD Graphics 3000

MacBookAir5,2 - Intel HD Graphics 4000

MacBookAir6,2 - Intel HD Graphics 5000

MacBookAir7,2 - Intel HD Graphics 6000

The issue here is the snippet of code needed for the NVIDIA chips has a problem within the newer generations of OX-X/macOS!

Looking back in time .... We know Apple and NVIDIA broke its relationship (Lawsuit) so the needed fixes in the code couldn't be applied as they just weren't talking to each other! Even today they still aren't talking!

@danj But does that mean ALL original macbook air have the same problem? How were they explaining that to people who bought a 2.5k laptop and had trouble with the backlight later?

さんによる

The issue you are facing is exclusive to the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M & NVIDIA GeForce 320M models.
