How do you Format iPod drive?

I think my iPod has the "too long file names" problem. Does anyone know how to format the drive? Preferably without dismantling. I can't seem to get it to restore :-(

Justin, make sure you have your files backed up. Place your iPod in Disk Mode. Here are the Apple instructions:

Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.

Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, then release them. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod, all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost.

When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.

Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod should say "Do not disconnect".

Now your computer should recognize your iPod as a drive. Try to format with your OS. After that you should restore it under iTunes. You do remember that this iPod requires Firewire for updates and restore. IT will NOT work with USB...

The best way is to connect the ipod to PC preferably Apple series iMac (2011 and older models only) with FiREWiRE input ( this is a must-USB does not work at all ) and FORMAT it by using the "Disk Utility" app first and then RESTORE it via iTunes as for the New iPod.
