Why does my phone keep bricking?

Please note: I have not changed anything software-wise, all stock MiUI that came with the phone.

The phone keeps just turning off as if someone’s unplugging the battery! I'll be doing something on the phone, I could be watching a video, playing a game, even just sat on the home screen with no apps open. Without warning the screen goes black and when watching the video sometimes I hear a tiny pop, probably just the sound cutting out. After this sometimes I'll be able to turn it on straight away, sometimes it won't turn on for hours, and during this time it will not charge, it'll just sit there bricked. Once it comes back on sometimes the battery level has dropped by 30-40% even if it's only been a few minutes.

Can anybody send some advice my way? Is there a fix? Do I need to replace the battery?

Thanks in advance!

I have a mi9 and my phone just started doing this a week ago and all of a sudden it cut off and wouldn't come back on! Then about 8 days later I thought to myself, I will try to turn it on again just for the heck of it! To my surprise, it powered on! Then, powered off! ☹️ Then powered on again! And off again! At least now I am able to turn the phone back on everytime! There has to be a reason for this happening guys! Has anybody ever figured this issue out as of yet, January 2, 2021? Thanks

Hi, i have the same issue.. my phone just turn of and on for no reason and it heats up, i shut it down but it turn on on itself then blink on and off again until it run out of battery, a technician told me it has to be with the ribbon connector of the power button but he didn't replace it yet. I did not use it for a day due to the issue and when i decided to go to the technician again it went back to normal so he never got the chance to replace it, I don't know if its hardware or software but i never did something unusual or any accident happen that will cause this phone to turn on and off on itself. Wtf is happening with xiaomi now?

Hi,

Try starting the phone in safe mode and check if the problem is still there or not

To get into safe mode:

Hold the power button until the options come up (Power off, Reboot, Airplane mode etc...)

Hold the Power off option until the safe mode dialog pops up.

Confirm that you want to reboot into Safe mode.

If for whatever reason this does not work try the following:

Power off your phone, then power it back on.

As the Mi logo comes up, hold the volume down button until you boot into Safe mode.

If it works OK in safe mode then a downloaded app is the problem.

The trick is to find out which one.

You’ll need to uninstall each downloaded app, one by one and test the phone in normal mode to see if it works OK or not. When it does work OK then the last downloaded app that was uninstalled was the culprit. Try starting with downloaded apps that were installed or updated about the time the problem first started.

If it is still no good when in safe mode, does it do this with the charger connected and switched on?

If not then try replacing the battery and check if that resolves the problem.

Here’s a link to the ifixit Xiaomi Mi 9 Battery Replacement guide, which may help.

Replacement batteries are available online. Just search for BM3L battery to get results for suppliers

Hi Jayeff, I understand it has been a while since my post, but I have noticed something strange. Today I received a new battery and installed it and it started working, so I put the phone back together, and within a few minutes, it had done the same thing. I've now noticed it only seems to be when I put the back on that it turns itself off in this way. Could the back casing be causing things to touch that shouldn't and making it short out the battery?

@Jake P-M ,

It seems so.

Perhaps it is putting pressure on at a certain point causing this to happen.

You might have to try to locate the actual place where this occurs. You could try using a plastic "tool" to gently push down on the systemboard at various places to see if you can make it happen to further narrow down where.

Don't know the phone but there is no metal (for whatever reason) on the inside of the back cover that may be touching where it shouldn't?

You may have to check your work again, just in case you missed something

@jayeff I might have to try the tool idea. It's odd because it is a completely plain glass back with a plastic coating on the inside.

Ok, let us know if your problem solved.

Sometimes it happens because of the low power transmission from the battery.

@Jake P-M did you try a reset your phone? If it doesn't work then you need to contact a service point it's your hardware problem 100% confirm.
