Water damage issues after submersion

Yesterday i thought it would be a good idea to take some underwater ab pics with my waterproof phone. After being submerged for about 5 seconds the screen began to get a green hue, and then started flickering. Another few seconds later the whole phone went completely dead. I chucked it in a bowl of rice overnight and the next day it would turn on fine, but face ID wouldn’t work and the screen was still green and flickering. I then used a heat gun on it for a while, and then spent ages shaking it to try to get the water out. This time face id started working, and the green hue was gone but the phone still has a flicker. The haptic feedback is also really loud. Not sure if it has permanent logic board damage or if there’s still some water in there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE:

I let it dry for another day, and the next time i powered it on it was functioning as normal excepting the taptic engine. However, about an hour later, the screen suddenly went black with some dim lines flickering across it, and the phone restarted. It was then stuck in a boot loop of showing the apple logo for about ten seconds, then the screen going black and then shutting off. I held all three buttons to shut it off, and then removed the screen and logic board. It’s sitting in isopropyl alcohol for a while, hopefully that will clean it up. The only visible water damage was on the side of the taptics engine and the aluminium cover for the camera module, where you could see some marks from salt water. I couldn’t see anything on the logic board, but i fear the water could have gotten under the processor housing.

I finally figured out the issue. The phone turns on completely fine and everything works when the flex cable for the touch digitizer and 3d touch is unplugged. I applied some isopropyl alcohol to the back of the screen, mostly around the areas where i could see components. After sitting for a while, I brushed it off and used a heat gun on it for about five minutes, and when i assembled the phone again everything was fully functional except the haptic feedback.

Well that's good that it's working better. I would recommend doing an iTunes back up of your phone if it's not fully backed up to cloud just incase something else stops working and phone goes dead.

Just a heads up, iPhone’s are not waterproof. They are considered water resistant. I work on them and I always tell people don’t take them near water and get a camera like a gopro for activities like that. I would recommend taking your phone to a repair shop, well know shop I should say. Rice does not remove water from electronics. The water stays in there and creates corrosion. Phone has to be taken apart to dry out or cleaned properly. In your case, your screen might be damage and need to replace since the water got between the layers of the lcd and created a problem and since the phone still works it can be saved. Just don’t wait too long before its too late.

It’s not an LCD, it’s an OLED panel, so i’m not familiar with how they would malfunction. I don’t think it’s permanent damage to the panel, because if i hold it upside down it briefly goes away. Would i be able to temporarily remove the screen to get the water out?

Actually waterproof/water resistant wordplay is nonsense. The point is, the IP68 performance is degraded on your phone and water leaked in immediately. Normally the phone should be sealed against any liquid ingress, no matter how long it spent underwater, 30 min or an hour is just test requirement, it doesn’t mean the phone will only survive that long. It does not make sense that a phone should only be sealed for 30 minutes, if it sealed, it is always sealed, unless it is damaged.

There is no point arguing how it happened as it already happened. Now you need to do damage control.

1: Rice is absolutely useless, don’t believe every garbage article on the internet.

2: If salt water got into the layers of board, you will need professional equipment to separate and clean them. It is beyond DIY level and you should just

I figured rice was useless, but gave it a try anyway as I know dessicants can soak up water really well but not help extract it. I think if it was major damage to the logic board the boot process would be interrupted way before it begins to show the apple logo, but I could be wrong. As far as I know, the only equipment needed to seperate the two board halves is a heating pad. If it's not functional after isopropyl alcohol, I'll try that.

Other desiccants are useless when it comes to liquid damage.

As @casp3rtech said, it’s not waterproof. I too tell my customers the same thing. Here’s a video explaining why rice doesn’t work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU5T0GOm...

Even though they are not water proof, they do have an ip68 rating, so i’d assume you could use it underwater for a few minutes, especially considering it’s supposed to withstand 30 minutes in one meter deep water.

As someone who repairs them on a daily basis, I wouldn't trust that ip68 or whatever rating they give them. It's really only meant if you drop it in a puddle or splash water on it.

Mine fell into a bucket of water and I removed it immediately, it played music for about 10mins den wen I tried the camera my phone went blind on me. Took it to a repair shop and I was told to immediately replace the screen. I'm a bit disappointed cuz my Motorola had similar issue but the screen is working fine.

@Chikwado Uche-Enwere liquid damage can vary from one device to another, even of the same model. Kinda like smoking. You could smoke your whole life and not have any negative effects while others will.

My phone got submerged in the water, camera, Face ID are not working, green lines have appeared and it flickers. My question - is it safe to charge?
