Charging port replacement part
My son tried to put the wrong charging cord into camera and it bend up the port. Do you repair this and if so, how much? Hoping to repair rather than buy new one.
Hi @credog ,
Ifixit does not do repairs.
Its’ volunteers offer advice on how to repair the device yourself or if you can’t what the best option may be.
Here’s a link to the ifixit GoPro Hero4 Black Expansion Port/Motherboard Replacement guide.
It is useful as it shows how to open the camera so that access to the charge port is possible.
The USB charge port is a smd (surface mounted device) type component so you will need smd soldering tools and skills to effect the repair.
There are plenty of video on YouTube that show how to remove / replace smd USB connectors.
Replacement parts are available online. Just search for GoPro Hero 4 black USB charge port part to get results.
Here’s a link to just one supplier. It is shown only to let you see what the part looks like and what it costs. There are other suppliers that may suit you better.
If you’ve never done smd soldering before, try to practice it on some old circuit boards etc before attempting to fix your camera as it requires a bit of skill not to overheat anything and thereby damage other components etc.
If this seem all too daunting, perhaps you could dis-assemble the camera and order the replacement part and then contact a mobile phone or electronics repair service and ask for a quote to remove/replace the connector only as they have the tools and the requisite skills. You supply the new USB part and the relevant circuit board only and you will re-assemble the camera.
This should reduce the cost of the repair as the labour time is greatly reduced.
Obviously the repairer would only guarantee their work and not anything else in case it didn’t work afterwards.
