Making a bootable drive.

Hi. I am trying to make a bootable drive for my iMac.

The iMac I am on to download the install application is running Catalina, and for the iMac to detect the USB drive as a bootable installer it needs to have the app on it (see: https://imgur.com/223qhmT ) and not just the dmg file downloadable from Apples website ( https://imgur.com/41a7iBP)

So what I need is someone running a slightly older version of Mac OS to help me out, if someone here is or has a older mac, you can go to the Mac app store and go to downloads and see the software installer there (for example Yoesmite) and just install the app again, put it on google drive and send me the link.

If anyone could do that I’d be able to get my Mac going again.

Cheers

@quinn218 I strongly recommend avoid going to unsupported OSX. The newer ones really slow down the machine - especially apple is known for https://www.ifixit.com/News/apples-lates...

  1. Open the program with a double-click.
  2. Select your USB drive in “Device”
  3. Select “Create a bootable disk using” and the option “ISO Image”
  4. Right-click on the CD-ROM symbol and select the ISO file prepaidgiftbalance.com
  5. Under “New volume label”, you can enter whatever name you like for your USB drive.

OK let me clarify a few points:

You have the ability to install your OS directly from Apple via Internet Recovery which if the system was running El Capitan or newer will have the needed firmware update installed to allow this. All you need is directly access to the Internet. In addition your system should have a recovery partition setup during the OS install or update on your current drive. As long as the drive is functional you have that as well.

Now the fly in the ointment!

Apple allowed the newer macOS’s certificates to expire prematurely! Here’s more on this If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today

I do recommend sticking with macOS Sierra as the best for your system. The issue is the limits of SATA drives. Apple upgraded the file system to APFS from the older HFS+ which runs better with SATA drives.

Yosemite, Sierra Mavericks or any operating system supported for the 2011 iMac is fine. Thanks. @abbyreb12

The newest Operating system that a 2011 imac can support is High sierra.

Here is a link to download that from the apple store:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-hi...

You can easily make a bootable drive from that.

@abbyreb12 Heres what I get when I go to download it: https://imgur.com/ni9OWcl

OK, You are going to have to use a third party program to download High Sierra.

This will download a copy of High Sierra directly from apple's server, so it is safe. Here is a link to the program.

Hey, So I downloaded the software you sent me, what do I do next? When I boot up the mac with only the software you sent me installed on the USB drive i get the prohibited symbol. Cheers. @abbyreb12
