Only turns on if battery removed

As the title says, I can only power on the laptop if I…

  1. Remove the battery
  2. Connect AC power
  3. At this point the laptop will power on giving the Novo button text and I can connect the battery, which works as expected.

Why is this? Why doesn’t the laptop power on with the power button or novo button?

how old is the laptop? may be the battery is defective?

@bmx2019 I don't think it's the battery, as the power button won't power on the laptop regardless of whether the battery is installed.

Ok so at number 3, leave the battery disconnected. It is actually unsafe for the laptop to be on and have the battery installed while it is on.

This can damage the charging / power management circuit in the laptop as most laptops do not support hot swapping batteries. Only ones that have dual batteries or high-end workstation / business models support this.

When removing and installing batteries, firstly make sure the device is powered off and not plugged in to a charger, that way there is no potential risk of damaging said circuits.

While having the laptop turned on, plugged into charger and no battery installed try turning it off normally and see if you can turn it on again with just the power button. If you can still I would consider replacing the battery first and see how that goes.

Sometimes batteries go faulty in unexpected ways like yours for example, usually a faulty battery most of the time will still let it turn on with it installed into the laptop but only with the AC laptop charger adapter attached. Once that gets detached while it is on the laptop should immediately shut off.

Thanks for the quick reply.

No worries, this model is suited for hot swapping of batteries.

With charger attached but no battery, power button still does not work. This makes me think the battery can't be the problem?

My guess would be a faulty power button. Likely causes are either cable from the power button being disconnected or the button has failed. Will need a digital multi-meter with probes under resistance / ohms mode to see if the button works. The button will short to 0 ohms on the meter when pressed and increase ohms when not pressed to indicate it works.

I will ask around for one, or see if they have one at the local hardware shop. Will return in a few days.

I realized today that the power button is lit during operation, and can be used to turn off the laptop. However, it still does not power on unless the aforementioned steps are taken.

> hot swapping of batteries.

Did you do the hot swap a lot of times and may be the contacts are bad. No one knows how the software detection- presence of absence of battery- interaction of this on power button.

Does the battery work OK? may be the bios/UEFI thinks battery circuit is bad and to protect the hardware it is not booting. just a wild guess.

Try to clean the contacts at both battery and laptop terminals.
