My MacBook Pro boots to a black screen, but external monitors work.

My MacBook Pro boots to a black screen, but external monitors work. Bad screen or something else? I’ve tried various key combinations that I’ve seen online with occasional success, but now it’s black all the time. I also tried reconnecting the display cable to the motherboard…no luck.

Using a flashlight shine it though to Apple logo are you able to see your desktop icons? If you do then your backlight logic needs repairs.

Thanks, Dan. I could see the desktop when I put the flashlight on the Apple logo. Now, go figure, I booted it up a while ago, and now the display is working again...but for how long???

Good karma ;-}

Started up again. I think it has something to do with OS compatibility because I wiped it and installed Mountain Lion, and that seems to be working.

No OS compatibility issues here! For the sake of augment that would affect the displaying of the image not the backlight! You stated you could see your desktop and its icons using a flashlight so we know the issue is within the backlight logic.

So why does it work and then stop and now after installing Mountain Lion is it working again?

Your logic board has a problem with a bad solder connection. The best way to think this is think how a power line cord connection within the plug can loose its connection causing the light to flicker or finally go out. Changing the lightbulb may appear to fix it as you've moved the light enough to cause the cord to re-connect.

Time to open and inspect things! Look around the LVDS cable connector. If you see something out of place take a picture use the guide pics to compare
