Screen fail? Or computer fail?
My MacBook is booked in to local Genius Bar but hoping for some informed comments. Please tell me it’s just a screen replace!
1) A month ago the screen was fading in and out (wiggling the screen would bring it back so sounded like the ribbon cable). This spontaneously resolved.
2) Then vertical lines at right edge partially obscuring screen but still useable.
3) I then had a 8 page A4 document that I placed on the keyboard and shut the lid for 12 hrs. Now the dreaded white screen. Won’t boot in safe mode or other ‘fixes’ for white screen. Sometimes chimes when started up, sometimes not. When I repeatedly press the enter screen it makes the bonk sound. Vertical lines still there as before.

Plug in an external display, does the image on the external look OK?

Thanks. Yes, displays on my tv with hdmi cable. Phew! Now backed up for first time in 18 months.
Interestingly I had taken it to a authorised apple repairer, they took it out the back, said they couldn’t get it to display on an external screen so it was probably not just the screen. I smell BS. Thankfully they couldn’t look at it ‘properly’ for 2 weeks.
Now looking at ifixit replacement screen. Seems do-able as diy.
