New refrigerators made poorly?

I have replaced my refrigerator twice in the last 6 years at our seasonal summer cottage. The refrigerator is turned off, unplugged over the winter months. I was told when the last one failed (maytag) that they use thinner lines in the refrigeration system and that the lack of circulation of coolant allowed the line to corrode. The newer refrigerator ( frigidaire) acts like it also is lacking refrigerant. Is this a common problem? Is there a brand that doesn’t have this weakness

Most things made today are planned to fail after six years so you will have to buy a new one. Hopefully, in the near future, “Made In the USA” will mean something again. But don’t hold your breath.

One of the worse things you can do to a refrigerator is to unplug it for more than a week or two. This could cause your compressor to lock up.

Some refrigerant lines are and have always been very thin, they need to be. Copper tubing erodes when it is in contact with water for a long period of time.

The most common cause for the refrigerant lines to leak, is dirty condenser coils. The coils should be cleaned at least once a year to prevent the air flow from becoming restricted. This causes the compressor to run hot, the refrigerant will also be hot, causeing improper flow. The copper lines will freeze and the ice around them and in them will cause expansion and leaks.
