kenmore front load washer Model #970-C48072-00 will not start. makes noise when start button pressed. also door will not open. lights do come on when start button pressed

Linda Shimizu start off by unplugging your washer and leave it unplugged for a while. Then plug it back in and check if it reset. The door not opening could be an issue related to the door lock assembly Let us know what you hear/see
Linda Shimizu okay so the door locked properly because your washer thought it was going to start. The grinding noise make actually come from your motor or your drive. Let me see if I can find out something more specific to your washer. It appears that this is a Canadian model number. If you have had the washer since new, there should be a tech sheet on the left hand side behind the front access panel.
Let us know if you find it.
See if you can access the diagnostic mode. Also check the control lock. Press OPTIONS and SELECT at the same time until the Control (Control Lock) indicator is lighted. To unlock the controls, press OPTIONS and SELECT again.
Remove the back from your washer to see if the belt is still on

I had it unplugged for an hour - just plugged it in - tried start but wouldn't start - noise sounded more like a dull buzzer and the door still wouldn't open.

pressed OPTIONS and SELECT as directed - no lights came on but on second try I was able to open the door! One problem solved! Will check the belt tomorrow and let you know.

Linda Shimizu what kind of noise does it make? How do you load it if the door does not come open?

I loaded the machine - closed the door - pushed start button - lights came on but only made kind of a grinding noise. I waited a few minutes - tried again - same result. At that point I tried to open the door but couldn't.
