Can I upgrade my Late 2012 iMac i5 2.7 GHz CPU to i7 3.1 GHz CPU?

Can anyone confirm this iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012) - Technical Specifications

Since it mentions you can upgrade if you have the i5 2.9 GHz (i5-3470S) to the i7 3.1 GHz (i7-3770S) but not if you have the i5 2.7 GHz (i5-3330S).

Does anyone have an experience upgrading their CPU i5 2.7 GHz to the i7 3.1 GHz and did it work and boot?

Thank you very much.

Often times Apple gets cheap on the 21.5” models by soldering the CPU's Vs offering a socket.

The 2012/13 21.5” model is a rare exception all four versions offer sockets iMac13,1 - Late 2012 & Early 2013 21.5 models

As long as you stay within the CPU’s this series used you should be fine. I personally have not upgraded the 21.5” 2012 systems, I have upgraded the 27” and didn’t have any issues.

Do keep in mind you can damage the display just in the process of taking it off if you don’t use the proper tools and techniques outlined in the iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2544 のロジックボードの交換 guide. This is not an easy job so make sure you are up to it.

I upgraded EMC 2544 late iMac 2012 21,5” with I7-3770s 3.1Ghz and it works fine. In combination with 16 GB RAM and SSD it was a major improvement :)

I did it 6 months ago, I went with the i7 -3770 3.4 GHz it burnt out 3 days ago and threw the SMC out.

It’s performance wasn’t that great as it would run hot upto 100c under load.

Stick with the lower powered 3770S and you won’t have a problem. They are plug and play, don’t forget to order a sticker kit to put your screen back nice.

I just put my old 2.7 GHz back in and its running faster with temps below 50c.

Your processor may have burnt because i7-3770's TDP is 77W. Instead, the compatible (in theory) one, i7-3770S, has a 65W TDP.

UPDATE: it is working great now, it was the disconnected display that caused the high CPU usage.

==============

I did the upgrade and the performance is very poor. The fan is running at all times and the Kernel CPU usage is very high.

I wonder if the problem it is not enough cooling or if it something else got damaged.

This is for a Late 2012 iMac 21.5” 2.7 GHz (originally).

I’m tempted to go back to my old processor.

Did you change CPU to 3770S (Skylake), the K version will not do as it will run too hot for your iMac cooling capacity. Also make sure that correct amount of thermal paste was used and cleaning before was sufficient.

Which CPU did you go with?

Used i7 3770s 3.10GHz Quad Core LGA 1155

3.1 GHz Core i7 (I7-3770S) should work are you sure its a good chip? Try another.

I cleaned the excess of paste and reinstalled all again. I forgot to mention that my screen was not connected (damaged) and I was using an external monitor via the Thunderbolt connector, I think that fact was causing the high CPU usage and not temperature problems. I attached the damaged screen and used the external monitor as a mirror, the system is working great. I will keep observing it. I updated my system with 500 Gb flash EVO card, 2TB Hard drive, and 16 Gb RAM. I did not detected heating problems before but I was confused about what could have been the cause of the High CPU usage, it was the non connected display.

I change in my iMac 21.5 2012 original CPU 2.7 i5-3335S to CPU 3.1 i7-3770S (pic of both CPU) and additionaly add 16GB RAM vs original 8 GB RAM.

Looking for special connector on the motherboard for put additional mSata SSD with specail connector, but found only the contacts for the connector, but not the connector itself. Because of this I plan to change common 1TB HDD Hitachi to 1TB SSD Samsung EVO860.

So, current specifiaction with CPU 3.1 i7-3770S, 16GB RAM and 1TB HDD looks normal. Maybe a slight increase in normal CPU temperature for 5 degrees centigrade but I think this is due to the fact that thermal grease (I use KERATHERM KP-12 ) is not put in the factory but my hands.

P.s. unfortunately, forgot to do benchmark test before any changes :(

Im Video editor and would like to know what kind of upgrade it could be done? Would a 3.1 GHz Core i7 run good or no chance?
