Top side corner of MBP screen lifting up, needs glue maybe? (Photo)

Block Image

Hello all. My old 2009 MBP has the back corner screen top lifting up when I close the machine. The screen works fine, and I can push the screen back down in the corner. I assume the glue needs to be re-applied?

I took the machine to a local repair shop, and they wanted to replace the entire top half of the machine, including the LCD screen, which I really can’t afford, and I’m not sure it needs to be replaced. Otherwise the machine is still going strong after almost 10 years.

If anyone has dealt with a similar issue, please let me know.

Take a look at this video and see if it helps, you may just need to tighten hinges and that may be enough but it looks like the metal blocks for hinge reinforcement have separated from the top chassis and may need to be reglued with epoxy.

That is super helpful, thank you Ben. I'll update when I can get home and try this.

I'm with @benjamen50 here! Epoxy is the ticket! But you'll need to get the display apart to clean the old glue and you'll want to scuff up the surface to make a better surface for the epoxy to adhere to.

Here's the IFIXIT guide to take your display fully off: MacBook Pro 15" Unibody 2.53 GHz Mid 2009ディスプレイアセンブリの交換 and here's the IFIXIT guide to take the display assembly apart MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Late 2008/Early 2009 LCDの交換 Jump down to Step14 and pick it up there.

Once the display is out you can clean and sand the pulled areas. You'll want to place a display frame & cover on a good flat surface with a wood board going on top with a bit of weight for a good 24hrs for the epoxy to cure. I would also place added epoxy around the frame at the glue points to add more strength. Just make sure you don't go into the areas the display fits into. And don't forget to sand the surfaces to give the epoxy a better grip!

Thank you so much for the extra info and links Dan. I think you're correct also. After looking inside, I don't think it's the hinge, but the display coming apart.

Chances are its from apples terrible design of having ALL the hot air from the cpu and gpu blowing on the hinge glue. Not your fault. Put some new epoxy and it should be fine
