No power ever to my Sony Turntable? Help.

We have a brand new PS-LX300USB but live in Fiji so limited access to warranty and repairers.

Assembled just as advised. No power. Took the back off to check it was all in order. all connections look right but start key doesn’t click and when plugged in and you mannually spin it doesn’t turn on or spin.

any suggestions for repair would be appreciated.

Hi, I know this post is from a very long time ago but I have just fixed a Sony ps-lx310bt with no power and managed to find a fault that may be common to these players.

Upon opening the bottom of the player I started looking for voltage going through the main board, which wasn't present anywhere. After working around the board I traced a short circuit to a Zener Diode on the board labelled ZD001. After identifying the component and sourcing a replacement, resoldering the new diode on to the board fixed the power issue and the player booted back to life!

Hope this may help people in future in case this is a common fault.

As you have already opened the turntable, you’ve probably voided the warranty anyway so use a DMM (digital multimeter) to check if the power is getting through the switch OK and after that through to the turntable motor.

You could use the DMM’s Ohmmeter function to check for continuity of the power, from the cord plug through the switch and on through to the motor. Do this with the power disconnected of course.

I cannot find a schematic diagram of the turntable but working out the circuit path for the power from the power socket to the motor should be reasonably easy.

Here’s a link to the ifixit Sony PS-LX300USB guide, which may be of some help.

The user guide mentions the power requirement for different locations. It doesn’t say whether this is selectable on the turntable or if it is fixed. If it is selectable so that it can operate in different countries which have different power supply voltages there is usually a small switch near the power cable entry into the device that is set to either the one voltage or the other

If it is selectable, check that it is set for 240V AC (Fiji power voltage) or if it is fixed that it states this on the model information label on the turntable.

If it says 120V AC on the label or if it is selectable and is set at 120V AC, you’ve probably damaged it by plugging it into 240V AC. If this is the case look for burnt out components, hopefully perhaps only a blown fuse etc. If you’re unsure if a component has been damaged, take some close up pictures of them and post them back here and hopefully someone will be able to help. here’s how to do this. iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法

Hi @nathandawson , i've had exactly the same problem as you. I accidentally plugged in a 19V/4.7A power supply into my Sony ps-lx310bt and since then no power anywhere.

Couldn't find any power on the board using a multimeter, so I tried unsoldering the Zener Diode ZD001 from the board and hey presto the bluetooth light comes on. I havn't tried anything else until i've sourced a replacement.

I'm wondering if you could help me identify the replacement zener diode? Do you happen to remember which one and where you bought it from? I really don't know what i'm looking for. Tried to google the number written on the diode but can't find any references.

I am really suprised that in 2023, and from a brand like Sony it's possible to do this with such an easy mistake.

The North American market is so huge that it probably saves them a few pennies to make a 120VAC only model.

Technically, that is a TVS = Transient Voltage Suppressor, its purpose is to suppress transients caused by lightning and other phenomenon. Per its datasheet, "• Typical failure mode due to exceeding maximum ratings is a short circuit condition". Breakdown voltage is 14.30 - 15.80. 19V qualifies as "exceeding maximum ratings".

I guess they could have put a proprietary connector on the adapter, but the std 12VDC power connector is ubiquitous. It was probably around b4 the 19V laptop connector, so you could blame the problem on that standard and not Sony. But then, you plugged it in without thinking. Yeah, I even do that at times.

@mike but then it is not a 120VAC device, it is a 12VDC device suitable for use with any xVAC to 12VDC adapter.
