Broken USB Port, Repair Possible?

Block Image

Hi, as you can see, one of the USB Charging Ports on my JBL Xtreme has 2 out of 4 pins crooked in there and it’s missing the little plastic thing that hold the other connector in place. Feels sad… Wondering if such a repair is actually possible? Like, can I just buy female USB port and just solder it on the board? If so, then how can I remove the broken one? I will also replace the battery. Mine is effectively dead after 2 years and can't hold a “full charge” longer than 20min at Max Vol. Impressive…

Thanks for your help :)

Hi @fantaz ,

Here’s a link to the ifixit JBL Xtreme Charging Port Replacement guide, which should be of some help in replacing the USB port.

You cannot just purchase any female USB connector as not all female USB connectors are the same as to their mounting lugs’ position on the USB connector body.

Their pinouts are the same, (although the pin type may be different, i.e. though hole, SMD etc), just not the lugs which mount them onto a board which has the mount pads or even slots specially positioned for that particular design connector.

Search online for a JBL Xtreme USB charge port to get results for suppliers of the correct USB connector.

Here’s a link to just one supplier. It is shown only to give you an idea of the cost of the part and for you to see the location of the lugs.

You’ll need soldering skills and tools to effect the repair.

Here’s a link to the other fixit JBL Xtreme guides which may also help you.

This MICRO USB port you're talking about, has never been used in my case and is not broken… I'm talking about the USB 2.0 TYPE A port used to charge other devices likes phones… Of course I will need tools and a good welder as I am not very used to this kind of fix…

Hi @fantaz ,

Well the guides can still be used to access the other USB ports as well.

Also what i said about USB ports not being the same still stands.

You need to check the exact configuration of the port, pin type and lug position to ensure that the replacement will fit correctly.

Also it seems as though the other USB ports may be SMD (surface mounted device) type connectors and not the through hole type (I may be wrong about this though), so you'll need to know how to "solder SMD components"- look on YouTube for how to do this. This is not as easy as it looks and you can cause more damage than what you had if you've never done it before.

Good luck with your repair.

What about this: https://www.mouser.ca/ProductDetail/Stew...

The original seems to be 90 degrees, 4pin Type A connector outputting only 1 Amp but I cannot tell if its USB 2.0 or 1.1 (probably not 1.1). Do you think it would fit?

I cannot seem to find any specs about the USB ports on the JBL Xtreme on Google so I might have to ask JBL their USB ports datasheet to compare it with the replacement connector datasheet

Hi @fantaz ,

Here's the datasheet for the USB part that you linked.

If it is USB 2.0 it won't matter as it is backward compatible. I don't think that they would bother with making connectors to USB 1 (or 1.1) specs any more.

Here's the info regarding power requirements of USB connectors
