Can sleep light/IR sensor on MacBook Pro 17-in Unibody be removed?

I want to temporarily remove the sleep light/IR sensor from the front of my MacBook Pro 17-in Unibody (early 2011). On first inspection, though, it seems to be stuck onto the metal. Is the light/sensor removable? If so, how should it be don?

Update (08/15/2018)

Here’s a photo of the dent. You can see it’s centred right where the IR sensor is; also note the bottom panel not quite fitting.

@mayer & @oldturkey03 - Any ideas how to bang this out without breaking the sleep LED?

The Sleep light & IR sensor is glued into the case just in front of the battery.

If you just need to test something I would just disconnect the connection from the logic board. Apple doesn’t offer it as a spare part so if you’ve damaged it you’ll need a new uppercase assembly.

My problem is that the body frame of the laptop is dented in that spot, so that the back plate won’t quite fit properly in that corner. My plan was to remove the sleep/IR assembly and gently hammer the dent out from the inside. However, if it’s glued on, this clearly isn’t an option. The laptop still goes, so I can live with this. Thanks for your answer.
