Why does it get electric shock?

Suddenly I got electric shocks from my new iMac. Happened this first time

Update (09/04/2019)

I have already carried out the two tests you mentioned. No fault was found. Plus the Imac was the only electrical equipment on in the room. There was no other machine it could have come from?

Then its time to visit an Apple Store or authorized servicer with your system.

You might be able to get them to visit you at your home. Call their support line. Don't be surprised if they ask you to pay for the onsite visit charge.

The machine was sent back to their factory in Ireland. They won’t release the Engineer’s report. All they have said is the computer is functioning as designed. As far as I know there is not software or hardware test than can go back to a specific time and identify a fault.

@maryav - Then it sounds like you got a static shock:

Static Electricity

Static Cling

Triboelectric Effect

I already had the machine tested for static by an appointed authorised engineer. The engineer confirmed there were no static issues.

@maxyfrasermf - Sounds like you are chasing your tail here. If the system was checked out with no problem then its back to your AC power and the building grounding! Trust me I've seen this over a dozen times. And yet it can be hard to nail down which is why you need to hire a good electrician who can make sure the breaker panel ground connection is properly in place and the wiring to your given outlet is correct.

The fact you only have the computer in the room with nothing else thats electrical has no bearing. The washing machine in the basement could have a bad motor or frayed wire.

I would strongly recommend you get a monitoring UPS as it will have the cicurity to monitor surges, dropouts and poor ground.

Check your power outlets wiring and ground service! Make sure you’ve got a 3 pronged outlet and it’s properly wired. Using a multimeter to check an AC wall Outlet or use a simple outlet tester.

Once you know your outlet is correctly wired test the system cord in the same way. Then when you plug the cord use your DVM to check the ground point of the outlet and the other on the systems metal body do you see voltage then? If your desk is conductive (metal) you might want to check it. Remove any electrical device other than the iMac (disconnect the other devices on the back of the iMac as well) to see if something else is shorted to ground and leaking to the iMac.

I received several electric shocks from my brand new Imac.

The sockets are earthed. Electricity usage was low on the day. The National Grid said there were no power surge issues. The only machine on at the time was the IMAQ., No other electrical devices on at time.

Any suggestions?

@maryav - Go to the hardware store and get a device like this one: Instant-Read AC Outlet Circuit Tester with Diagnostic LEDs to test your outlets. If they are OK your system has crossed wire internally (very rare).

Seems there is conflicting advice as to what might be the cause. 1. static 2. GROUNDWORK electricity supply issues 3. Sockets not earthed correctly. Or it could be the machine is at fault because the aluminium casing is more likely to conduct electricity.

Max - No conflict! If the outlet and the cord where checked with nothing found. As well as checking the building ground and Apple likewise stated no problem within the system its self.

The only thing left is a static shock.

i had the same problem if i touch the keyboard or the imac Chassis, i want to assure you i'ts grounding issue, i live in an old house, i tried every thing, i even teared down my 5k mac , ( i already know how since i have upgraded my CPU ) , the probelw was with the grounding, what i did is i wired a copper wire to the grounding imac outlet and attached it to the wall, since then i never had any elctric shock.

I have mid 2017 5k mac.
