1 MacBook screen and external monitor go black or white randomly. How to
Hello, I recently connected my mid 2010 mbp to an Acer monitor (x243w) with an HDMI to mini display port. I use both the laptop and display as dual monitors. Things tend to work well some of the time, but randomly and sometimes 10 times over the course of a few hours of use, the MacBook and display will either go completely black or white. The laptop and monitor remain on and both appear to be operating normally except that there is no display. The only thing that seems to bring the screens back to functional use is restarting the laptop entirely. This does not happen without the external monitor connected.
I have looked online quite a bit, and it appears that this is a common problem with this year and model. But, there does not seem to be a clear solution. Some say the logic board needs to be replaced; some say there is an issue with the graphics card; others say the LVDS cable (not sure what that is) is not connected properly to the logic board; others seem to say the computer needs to be baked in the oven...
I have not been able to tell if any particular type of use causes the screens to go black. Does anyone know of the solution for this? I am game for trying something myself, but I don't want to go inside the computer if I don't even know what I am looking to fix. Thanks very much!

By the way, the TG image is with safari open (2 tabs), evernote, TG, and powerpoint.

I turned the fans up manually, and system dropped to 65 c/149 f in about 3 minutes.

Thanks, Dan. I guess it could be due to overheating, but there aren't any signs of overheating I am aware of when it happens. Today I was using Safari open to google docs and microsoft powerpoint. I also recently dusted the inside of the computer.
I guess I should also mention that I upgraded to an SSD and 8gb of RAM and a new battery about 1.5 years ago. I had some issues with fans speeds that I was able to resolve, and other than this problem since connecting an external monitor, my 8 year old computer runs very well.

How about downloading this app: TG Pro take a screenshot of the apps window (you may need to stretch it out a bit to get all of the sensors to show up) and paste it here for us to see. iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法
What did you do with the fans? You stated you had a problem with them.

Thanks all. Apparently the fans can go crazy when an SSD is put in the mac... and then they can also go crazy when the software is updated. Both of these things caused my fans to randomly run very fast. I cleaned them out, which did not help at all, and then I reset the SMC, as that's what others said to do. The reset worked. I didn't have the fan problem until I upgraded to Sierra and then the fan issue happened again, so I reset the SMC, and the fans returned to normal as they had the first time.

Your fan should be running a bit here clearly it's not. Lets see what AHT shows Finding Hardware Faults: Exploring AHT & Apple Diagnostics. let us know if something pops.

Thanks for the help, Dan and Mayer. I tried to run AHT several times but it would not work. It only allowed me attempt a boot into the online version of AHT. This error appeared: "-3403D" overlaid on a globe.
I have had no issues with the external monitor since manually monitoring my fans to stay below 65c.
