Update

Thanks all, I kinda suspected it was an inclosed jobby.

I did however do some more research..in my drawer

and discovered a magic universal lube called 'INOX',

didn't list contents but it's a non silicone dry lube spray.

Decided not to open up torx screws, too much trouble..

I applied it in and around with a thin straw

type spray adapter, worked it back and forth a bit,

wiped up the excess, and so far it seems ok,

no creaking or damage to report...yet. Will update if

anything bad happens after this experiment. Thanks!

I'd spray it with some WD-40, and then work the screen back and forth a few times until you notice it being smoother/quieter.

WD-40 won't help. The hinge isn't even visible unless you remove the aluminum cover (held in place by two torx screws). The hinge is actually a steel pin fitted inside a metal (aluminum I think) cylinder which seems impervious to lubricant. One of these broke on my 867 MHz PBook last year and I eventually replaced it. Powerbookmedic.com sells the hinges, as do others.

If the hinge seems to be getting tighter over time, be careful opening/closing the lid. I'd suspect a broken hinge is not far away.

I use WD-40 on Titaniums all the time. You have to make sure to get it down deep in the cracks, but it does work.

A drop of lightweight oil.

i.e. sewing machine oil.

Just a drop on each end (don't over do it) it will migrate... not sure a dry spray lube would.

Good Luck,

N .

Probably too late this hint, but nevertheless...

You could do this, it works for years now on my book:

Take of the shields (very easy) with one of these handy Chinese sets or you could use an ordinary instrument screwdriver that fits.

Take a mini-powertool like a Dremel or sort-like,

grind away a thin layer of te steel that's holding the pin, preverable at several sides of its curved surface

Grinding away half of the thickness will reduce its strenght 50%, do tests on the way, the book should stay open, even when it is almost closed!!

I used a vacumecleaner to avoid particals too get in, while grinding.

Works SUPER!!

Good luck!

Hi Viento

Have two 'instructive' ;-) pictures for you, glad to mail them.

Grinding away some material seemed to be the only solution and still works great!

Had no succes with lubricants at all.

Let me know your mail-address
