Computer just blacked out.

Not sure if it's connected, but my sister just put a connected Micro USB into the USB port of this PC that I've had for quite a while. At that moment it just went out, no indication of life, no lights turning on. Checked that the charger is just fine. I'm not sure if connecting the Micro USB trough the wrong port to the computer itself can break it, but it seems the only logical case. I'd understand if it went out of old age, but it just happened instantly. What could have happened here? Is it the USB or possibly something else?

Hi,

The metal jacket around the micro USB may have shorted out the +5VDC power supply to the USB port and also it may have affected the USB controller by connecting +5V to it as well on the USB data lines. I don't know why it would affect the rest of the laptop and not only the USB ports and USB controller though.

Perhaps the whole +5V supply in the laptop (derived from the battery (or the adapter) may have been affected.

The laptop has various power supply rails of different voltages in it.

You may have to open it up and check if you can see any obvious signs of damage. Hopefully perhaps only an onboard fuse (or fusible link) may have been blown.

If this is the case once the +5V is restored it may work again, but possibly not the USB ports as no doubt the USB controller would have been fried.

Was it just connected to something or was it like some sort of flash drive?

The USB was connected to the computer and the Micro USB was put into another USB port.

Have you tried charging the battery for ~24 hours or so?

Yes, still no signs.

So you plugged the computer into itself with a USB cable?

さんによる

With a Micro USB, it wasn't even a compatible port.
