This is interesting- my cube works….but it makes a faint high pitched noise when it is OFF!

If I unplug it the sounds stops. It is faint, but unmistakeable. And it couldn’t be the fans, because it does it while off.

???

All that comes to mind for me is that it is the power supply. I'm pretty sure it is getting power all the time, and the on/off is not wired straight into the 120V AC. The other possibility would be that it is a small pressure difference between the tank and ambient air pressure, for example caused by the air in the tank cooling off and causing a vacuum. If the high pitched noise continues when it is unplugged, then it is probably air squealing by the cap. Remove the cap, if it continues, then your ChiliCube is haunted/possessed. :-) Or maybe a capacitor is discharging? Beats me!

Definitely possessed/haunted!

Keith Hooper, The high pitched noise may have been from a faulty fan or possibly pump(bearing). Below find a couple links to disassembly guide that can get you inside the unit to check and test for bad components. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

From your description, it sounds like the pump either went or it got clogged. This is probably too late for you, but here are my recommendations:

1. If you have not done a full-on cleaning cycle, do that. Replace ALL the water with hydrogen peroxide. Leave the cap off, and set a folded up washcloth or hand towel on top. Make sure it does not drape over and block the vents on the sides. Set the temperature to the highest it will go (I think it goes up to 105º F or so, and then says HI.) Let it run this way for 6 hours. The cloth is there to absorb water that may bubble up during the cleaning. The heat and chemicals should kill most of the growth. If your system is really gunked up, pour it all out and repeat, the more gunk you can pour out the better.

2. I found my pad and cube started getting gunked up with bacterial growth. That could clog the pump eventually if you do not run the cleaning cycle like they recommend. I eventually started just filling my cube with 100% hydrogen peroxide all of the time, even though it will sometimes bubble over. Put it on a cookie sheet if water could damage the floor.

3. If that did not help, make sure that the thermal breaker is reset by pushing a long pencil or something to poke the reset through the hole in the bottom. It took several tries for that to work for me.

If you are handy, you can find a replacement pump on the internet, and replace it yourself. Use the teardown that I wrote above. There may be a comment or reply in one of those two guides which has a pump part number in it, I can't remember.

4. Lastly, call ChiliCube. If it is still under warrantee, they will fix it. If not, I would hope they would fix it for a fee.

Replacing the pump is easy to do. Finding the pump is impossible. I have not been able to find one after much searching.

I found a way to fix the pump. I found the shaft had worn VERY thin on the back end (not the blade end), but not evenly all around.. I'd say 50% on one side, and 25% on the other leaving only about 25% of the shaft left, making it lopsided and giving a vibrating noise. I was able to push the shaft out of the blade/magnet assembly (push it out from the good side and pull from the worn side so you don't damage the good side. Be sure to measure how much shaft is out each end. There is a knurled section 1/2 way. Cut the shaft (with a Dremel tool) ON THE BAD side, just beside the knurled section, then FLIP the shaft and push the warn section back in the magnet side, and the good section into the blade side. Remember to put the small washer back on the magnet side before inserting back into the pump. Good as ALMOST new !!!

I found that hydrogen peroxide destroyed my water pumps.

Chilli no longer recommend using hydrogen peroxide .

After 3 failed water pumps I now use water bed treatment instead and the last add on aquarium pump has lasted for years.

What aquarium pump did you use?

My chili pad cube recently started making the loud high pitch noise intermittently when plugged in and during use. It’s unusable bc of the noise. Is the general consensus that a bad pump is what causes this? Would a tear down reveal that? Thanks. I’m not handy but have a friend who is extremely capable that I’m going to ask to do this- I just want to point him in the right direction. PS. I can’t get a hold of anyone at chili pad.

I have the high pitched noise when plugged in, whether it’s running or not. It’s at the top end of my hearing. I’m guessing if I were 5 years older, I would no longer hear it.

My phone charger makes a similar noise. It’s something to do with transformers/adaptors, and the super high frequency vibration caused by electromagnetic interactions inside the device.
