stuck on start up

With the power off, try removing all the memory sticks and see if you get a beep error or blinking LEDs (Power, Hard Drive and Wireless). If nothing happens then the processor is bad, if you get a beep or blink code it is probably the memory, you can go to the Dell site to get the information on the beep/blink codes.
The current Dell computers now use the LEDs for start up errors.

What OS is installed?
Have you tried starting in 'safe mode' to see if it boots all the way to the Windows desktop?
Have you tried booting using the 'last known good configuration option'?
Have you tried a system restore to a previous restore point?

hello it doesnt load past the dell logo and the slide bar stops about a quarter of the bar and its running vista home premium

Hi,
Can you get into BIOS?
Press F2 soon after startup.
If you can check that there is a HDD being detected in BIOS.
try pressing F12 soon after startup and see if you get into Dell's Diagnostic partition to test a custom test on the HDD to see if it is failing.
