How do I repair a black MacBook screen?

While sitting in an armchair, my puppy was jumping around and my Macbook Pro was knocked off my lap. When I picked it up the screen was bright blue in the places that should have been white. I restarted the computer, but now the screen displays nothing at all.

The keyboard still lights up and adjusts brightness, and I can hear the laptop running just fine, but the screen is completely black -- nothing faintly in the background, no results from adjusting the brightness, nothing.

I called Apple to troubleshoot, have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, tried restarting it in safe mode, restarted it all those ways plugged in and not plugged into the charger... everything I could think of or find online. I even opened the back to see if anything inside was dented or loose and didn't see anything (though I don't know much).

I took it into the Apple Genius Bar today and they wouldn't open it because "they don't have the tools" -- my Mac is too old. They sent me to an Apple Authorized Service Provider who wanted $70 just to run diagnostics and couldn't get to it for several days, never mind the cost or time for repairs. Depending on what's wrong, that seems an awful lot of money just to take the back off and look at it!

Before I fork over my dough to this Mac store, I'm wondering if anyone has ideas about what could be wrong? If it's not clear, is there a better service to use or place to send my laptop?

Thank you! Unfortunately, after trying all three of the suggestions, still no screen. I'm wondering now if I should replace the display.

If you could attract the attention of @mayer or @danj they would be of more help as they are our resident Mac gurus

Very likely the LCD cable needs repositioning or replacing, since this causes the colour distortion you describe. You need to heat and remove the glass to do this, so if you feel this is too much effort to check this, I would recommend sending it to a 3rd party repair centre to verify and repair this (Apple will just replace the whole top lid if it needs the cable, which costs $$$)

If you do want to give it a go, there are videos on Youtube or guides on removing the glass on iFixit
