Left side not working.

Hi,

Have you tried using a DMM (Digital Multimeter -Ohmmeter function) to prove the continuity of the wire for the left speaker from the plug.

Here is an image of the plug wiring connections for Apple products.

If you connect one test probe of the Ohmmeter to the tip (left audio) of the plug and the other probe of the meter to the ring 2 connector (ground), the meter should display a reading.

If it displays no reading connect the probes between the ring 1 connector (right audio) and the ring 2 connector (ground) and see that you get a reading.

If not check that your meter has been set up correctly.

If you do get a reading then go back to the first check for the left audio and verify that you have no reading. If it still displays nothing, with the meter probes still connected to the tip and ring 2, flex the earphones cable where it emerges from the plug to see if the meter shows anything. If it does it proves that there is a fracture in the cable near the plug.

If the meter doesn't show anything when you do this try flexing the cable near the entrance to the left earbud an see if the meter responds. If so the fracture is at the earbud end of the cable.

If the meter doesn't respond when you do this , it may either be a faulty connection to the tip of the plug, a faulty connection to the left speaker, a faulty speaker or a broken wire somewhere along the length of the cable.
