Nexus 5 rebooting randomly

My Nexus 5 is restarting on its own. Not bootlooping - it is often able to complete the booting process and be usable for a few minutes before restarting again. This happens regardless of whether the phone uses battery power or is plugged in. Tried flashing it back to stock (factory images: KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow) - it didn't help, so it looks like a hardware issue. When first turned on after being idle for an extended period it usually works longer before rebooting, then reboots become more frequent.

Incidentally, the random restarts don't happen in flashboot or recovery modes.

HI! I have a completely similar problem with my nexus. This does not seem like a problem with the power button, since the nexus does not show the android power menu before rebooting or shutting down. Did you find a way how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Very common power button problem. Simple replacement would fix this problem!

@zengr Why do you think so?

Yep it's very likely a faulty (shorted) power button. Don't let this go on for too long as constant reboots can and will damage the storage portion of your phone. If it goes on for too long the software will corrupt and the storage won't mount and you'll have a bricked phone.

Thanks for your answers. I am just curious though: if the power button is the culprit, why would the reboots become more frequent the longer the phone is kept on? When I first turn it on after it's been off for a long time, it will work for about 10 minutes, then reboot itself, then work for for another 5 minutes, reboot, work for 2 minutes, and then start rebooting constantly. This pattern occurs every time it's turned on from "cold" state. To me this sounds like an overheating issue somewhere, but the phone does not actually overheat. I even tried replacing the battery, as I had a similar problem with another phone which I was able to trace to a bad battery. But here the battery was not the issue. So why would a shorted power button cause a pattern like that?

P.S. I am not particularly handy with a soldering iron, so I am trying to exhaust my other options before replacing the power button. And also - to use the opportunity to improve my understanding of how phone components actually work.

I'm guessing it has something to do with temperature or perhaps it's the spring inside the button itself that fails. You can always try to take out the board and give it a good scrub with alcohol and see if it helps. It should but problem will reoccur again eventually
