Why won't my device turn on?

My device is currently turned off, and no matter what I do it will not turn on. How can I fix this?

I also have this issue. I have checked all three of my batteries and made sure they were charged. My camera still will not turn on. I then tried to rule out whether it was a battery issue to begin with by plugging it into a wall outlet battery and still no power. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. I tried using four different batteries and it still won't turn on. What should I do?

Your battery might be damaged or dead. Try removing your battery and charging it. Make sure the battery is fully charged before re-inserting it into the camera. If you're still having issues, you might need to replace your battery. Check out this troubleshooting guide for more information.

If the battery itself is working, it may be either the battery door or the SD card door. Each has a small switch that if not activated when the door is closed, the camera will not operate, and appear "dead". My camera had a small plastic "pin" on the door designed to activate the door when closed and this pin had been broken off.

You can check the switches if you know the battery is good. Just turn on the camera with the battery inserted and use a small screwdriver to activate both switches. Keep in mind that both doors have to be shut with the switches activated to allow the camera to turn on.

This is a well known "issue".

Great idea, Tony. I feel silly of not thinking about this before.

Can you give some pointers (or a picture?) of where are these switches located or something like that?

Thanks!

Where are these switches? A picture would be very helpful thanks

Thank you, this resolved my issue! This is the first time ever that the "helpful" sites resolved an issue for me.

Thanks again,

I’m having this issue all of a sudden. Where can I find the switches?

I have a working T3i, set to movie mode (the only one I use)

Without Magic Lantern (Canon v1.0.2) and a good SD card: The red LED flashes only when you turn it on (twice, quickly), or when you open the battery compartment (once) (not when you close it? I thought I'd seen that.)

With Magic Lantern (which isn't really "installed", it's just added to the SD): The red led flashes any time you either open or close either the battery door (long flash, possibly 2 or more) or the SD door (similar.) When you turn the camera on, there are many flashes over several seconds and one long flash when you turn it off.

With no SD card in the camera, the LED never blinks when opening and closing either door. However, when you turn the camera on, the mirror clicks and the LCD turns on, saying "No card in camera".

With a dead SD card (e.g., an empty microSD adaptor), the LED doesn't blink, there's no mirror click and the LCD will not turn on -- the camera appears to be dead. Inserting a good SD card WON'T FIX IT -- the camera still appears to be dead. If you remove and re-insert the battery (quickly, so you don't lose your configuration), the camera then works normally. I conclude therefore that the camera reads the SD before flashing the LED. So, if your camera appears to be dead, try a new/better SD card and remove and reinsert the battery.

Irisheyes and Dana ask where the switches are. You can't get to the electrical connections of either door switch without opening the camera; but you can see the switch buttons. It's easier to find the switches when you know what's pushing them. Tony was talking about the little rectangular pins on each door that push the switches. If a pin breaks off, that could cause apparent death. The battery-compartment-door pin is right below the arrow printed on the inside of the door -- opposite the hinge, toward the center of the camera. The SD-card-door pin is opposite the hinge, toward the bottom of the camera. The SD-door pin is about 0.1" x 0.05"; the battery-door pin is slightly larger.
